You might ask....."What is a caudate?". Well a caudate is a tailed amphibian which are the salamanders. Newts are actually a type of salamander. All newts are salamanders, but, not all salamanders are newts. Worldwide there are about 500+ species of salamanders. They live mainly in the temperate regions across the world. These are areas that see seasonal changes throughout the year. They prefer cool moist forests and most live in or near water. Some live their entire lives in water while others never go near it. Except for the sirens all salamanders have 4 legs, the sirens only have two front legs. All newts and salamanders have teeth as well, even on the roof of their mouth. The majority of species have no lungs at all and breathe through thier moist skin. Salamanders do not have any ears and can not hear air born sounds. The do have a special inner ear which allows them to pick up vibrations from the ground through thier front legs. They range in size from just over one inch to an astounding five feet in length!
