DOSHISHA UNIVERSITY VS KYOTO CC
Played at Miyamaki on Sunday the 8th of april, 2007
Used to traveling long and grueling distances to play cricket, it was with great anticipation we looked forward to playing Doshisha on our own door step. So much so, in fact, that Hamish and myself got there half an hour too early. I was reading an article on Darfur, and was surprised when I looked up to see thats where we appeared to be. To say there is nothing at Miyamaki is rather an understatement. There is a university however, and thats where we started walking. upon reaching it, 20 minutes later, we discovered that we weren't in fact playing at the university, rather we were playing about a 20 minute walk in the other direction. After the little mistake settled down, and we arrived at the ground knackered, we found the ground to be rather small. This was a good thing - after that walk we didn't fancy too much ball chasing. It was decided in the interests of safety and to make the back-yard cricketers feel more secure to play the good old six-n-out rule - any hit into the tennis courts would result in your dismissal. In a moment of astute captaincy, I lost the toss but was rewarded with fielding first which is what I wanted anyway. I threw the ball to James who through great planning took the first wicket. Via the six-n-out rule. This is a dubious honour to say the least. He was partnered by Chai - who through more astute captaincy was getting prodigious in-swing. History will show he got 4 wickets, and also that through yet more astute captaincy - via payment to the scorers - only 1 bye was recorded. Big thanks to Scottie for being a great team man and opting to score, then take more photos of Kyoto batsmen being dismissed than is reasonable rather than play. When we finally got rid of Mick leaving him time to sledge the "keeping" from the sidelines, knowing he was in no danger of "keeping" himself, the wickets had been evenly shared and Doshisha were out for a very respectable 144. They look to have some talent, and as Russel kindly pointed out - while not on the phone - from the square leg umpiring position, certainly have better forward defensive shots then me. How prophetic this would turn out to be...
We watched the Doshisha bowlers warm up, and they looked alright. Luckily there were no more comments from Russel. In the penultimate moment of astute captaincy, I strode confidently to the crease. I took guard, and looked at the left hander - in his hand was a ball that was a rather different red to the one we used. Paying no heed to it I allowed it to swing around 3 miles and crash into my foot with a thwack Scottie said he could hear from the boundary at long off. Trying desperately not to show the fast bowler he hurt me I cried "AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH". Limping back to my mark, in he came, splayed went the stumps and off I went. Kyoto 0-1 after two balls. Tristan - so often our saviour was badly needed. What wasn't was the superb in-swinging yorker at pace. Back went the leg stump and back went Trist. Kyoto 0-2 after three balls. In almost the last moment of astute captaincy I sent in Matt - new Matt - and allowed him to get a very well put together 50. With 3 runs needed for victory and in the last fit of astute captaincy, I ordered Chai to hit a 6 for the win (clean bowled) and Hamish to hit a 6 for the win (clean bowled). Matt then bought up the win with an uncalled for 6.
Big thanks to Doshisha for hosting what was a really good day and playing with great spirit and no small amount of talent. With more game experience and a bit of coaching they will be a very reasonable team.
Darren Hannah, Kyoto Captain (astute).
