The opening game of the season for the defending champions KRAC saw them taking on one of the new teams to the competition for 2007, the Kansai Fighters. With the forecast for rain and the conditions being overcast, upon winning the toss, KRAC opted to bowl in hope of exploiting the bowler friendly conditions.
The Kansai Fighters, a team comprising of players from the ex Osaka Tigers and many new players to the competition came out and played aggressively from the first ball. Uzair was very punishing on any overpitched bowling and this saw the Fighters scoring at a fast rate. The ball was moving around a lot contributing to many wides as the bowlers struggled to find their line. However as the bowlers found their line wickets fell with Sameer producing an excellent opening spell, claiming 3 wickets.
KRAC looked like they were starting to get on top with the Fighters at 4/49 especially with the top wicket taker for the last two seasons, Dave, being introduced into the attack. However, Ashraf(52) and Bhutta(67) had different intentions. The two set about taking the KRAC bowlers apart with a 103 run partnership. KRAC had their chances but dropped catches early in the partnership, which let the Fighter batsman get away. With the departure of Bhitta and 10 overs to go it looked like KRAC was still going to restrict the Fighters to less than 200 but some late flurries from the tail end batsman, the Kansai Fighters managed to post a score of 251 for 9 in their 35 overs. For the KRAC Sameer(3-31) and Chamara(2-32) were pick of the bowlers with Dave Gleeson having a very unhappy day with figures of 0 for 84 off his 7overs.
Rain had been falling persistently all morning but had not been heavy enough to force the players from the field. During the lunch break very heavy rain looked like it was going to bring an end to the match but just before the restart time the rain eased and played were able to return to the field. KRAC started steadily with the Fighter opening bowlers bowling tightly. The early wicket of Russell brought Robb (18) to the wicket and his partnership with Mick (54) looked like it would push the KRAC on to a good chase until Robb was bowled by Butt with a great Yorker. Wickets fell steadily from then on and other than an display on power hitting from Sameer (44) the KRAC batsman were unable to build partnerships under the pressure of the fighters bowlers. When the last wicket fell KRAC were all out for 185 with Uzair (3-35) and Rizwan (3-35) the most successful of the Fighter bowlers.
It was a very strong all-round performance from the Fighters with their batsman playing aggressively and bowlers taking wickets when they needed to. KRAC will go away from the game disappointed with their efforts and rue the lost opportunities that cost them heavily. At the end of the day a deserving victory to the Kansai Fighters but I am sure this wonft be the last match we see between these two teams this season.
