An Environmental
Question

FOOD to
GASOLINE replacement
???

Most of us know how many food calories an adult needs per day, so in the debate over making ethanol from corn to replace gasoline wouldn't it be nice to know how many food calories there are in a gallon of gasoline? Can you skip breakfast and drive to work on the energy you didn't eat?
(There is more to food than simply corn plus the processes of converting corn to food or of converting corn to ethanol have different efficiencies so this is not the whole story. An important part, however.)
The answer is: the number of food calories in a gallon of gasoline is 31,500.
For most adults this is the energy in about two weeks of food.
YOU can calculate this. How to calculate page.

August 2, 2008      Saturday,   6:30 PM  to  ?    FIELD TRIP
"Picnic and Moth Night" at Nolde Environmental Edu Center (Nolde Forest).   This event was very well attended last year even though the silk moths didn’t show. Let’s hope for a warm night this time.  Bring a picnic dinner and enjoy the Katy-dids with friends and family as our leaders bait trees and hang sheets to bring in the night insects. A flashlight would be helpful. Who knows what will turn up; perhaps the family of Barred Owls from last year?   Meet at picnic area behind Nolde Headquarters. Soft drinks will be provided.  Leaders are Ryan Woolwine 610 777 2333 and Ken Lebo 610 856 1413.
