Butterfly Walks in Berks County
- 2008
Checklists for each location are handed out at these walks
so you can record what you see.
All levels of interest are welcome: children, adults of all ages, novices
and advanced.
April 26, 2008 Saturday 10:00 am
Neversink Mountain - Butterflies etc. Meet at S. 10th and South
Street Reading. Park on South Street. This is a joint walk of the
Mengel Natural History Society and the Baird Ornithological Club. Often
10-15 species of butterflies are seen even this early in the year
including some seen only in the spring. Leaders: Karl Gardner, 610-987-3281

French Creek State Park as part of the Wild
Resources Festival. Times will be on Berks County
Nature when the organizers release them. This festival will have many
outstanding activities - mushrooms, butterflies, snakes, wildflowers, and
other hands on - see up close - touch - taste events. Touch and taste as
appropriate of course.

Blue Marsh Lake. Want to learn how to identify and attract butterflies
to your back yard? Join local naturalist Karl Gardner on a guided
butterfly walk at Blue Marsh Lake. Bring along your binoculars and guidebooks,
and be ready for a fun morning. Karl will bring caterpillars of several
species of local butterflies to show before the walk. We typically see
8-10 species of the 37 which have been confirmed at Blue Marsh in recent
years. Meeting location: Church Rd. parking lot off Rt. 183 south of Bernville.

Near Lake Ontelaunee. Meet at Dam Breast on PA-73. Mengel Natural

August 2, 2008 Saturday 6:30 / 7:30 pm.
Picnic and “Moth Night” at Nolde. Bring a picnic dinner
and meet at 6:30 PM at the picnic site behind the Nolde headquarters building.
Drink refreshments will be provided. Around 7:30 PM preparations will begin
to attract night active insects including moths. Join us for this annual
social gathering and the opportunity to see what really goes “bump in the

September 6, 2008 Saturday 10:00 am
Butterfly Identification Walk. Wyomissing area.
From Museum go west on Parkside Drive South to Old Mill Rd. Turn right
and continue a few blocks. Park on left in gravel lot at field next to
stone building. Mengel/Baird walk. Leaders: Karl Gardner, 610-987-3281
and Ken Lebo, 610-856-1413.

We will watch for butterflies and host plants, and use viewing jars
so you can get a close look. A few butterfly nets for young and not
so young will be available for the walk. Except for April, there will
be caterpillars brought to see and sometimes to give to attendees to rear
to adult butterflies.
