NS14 Single Handers
NS14 Single Handers
The New High Performance Single Hander
Welcome to the 2004/2005 season
Like sailing single handed?
Having dificulty finding a crew?
Want competitive racing without having to be an olympic athlete?
Then this is the boat for you!
Introduction
A concept originally started by a few NS14 sailers who were having dificulty finding good crews,
has produced a highly competitive boat which is a pleasure to sail.
The hull must conform to the NS14 rules, with a maximum sail area of 7sqm.
The rig is sufficiently flexable to cater for all crew weights, light people use bendy masts which depower easily,
whilst the heavyweights use the traditional NS14 wing mast to provide more power.
Various hulls have been tried, from 15 year old flightXVs, recent Eoro 9s and 10s and custom built hulls.
Overall the performance is little affected by the hull shape, with the older and newer designs finishing within
seconds of each other
Single handed NS14s can now be found sailing in Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and Brisbane
Conversion
The easiest way to obtain a boat is to buy a standard NS14 and remove the jib. This is exactly what many NS14s do
when they join our state championships.
For a better balanced boat, which is easier to sail in heavy weather, the mast should be moved forward slightly.
The exact distance will depend on the hull concerned, the later hulls seam to need less movement.
The last few Championships having been wone in unmodified boats
This article by Jim Fabian has all the details for converting
an NS14 for single handed sailing.
