THE WAKING OF AMERICA
September 11, 2001

September 11th has always been a red-letter day in my life. I was born on September 11, 1967. This year, however, my day of celebration was the darkest day that America has seen in my lifetime. The people of this peaceful nation; Christians, Jews, Muslims, Atheists, Buddists, Hindu; rose to the morning sun to live their lives. Little did we know, evil men would send thousands to meet their God.
I woke on that morning to my husband wishing me 'Happy Birthday'. Some people woke up to ready their children for school. Many prepared for a business meeting. Some went shopping. Moms made breakfast and packed lunches. Lovers made love. Some folks sat in traffic. Some knelt in prayer.
Several thousand people went to work at the Trade Center. A great many took a flight that seemed very routine. Firemen started a new shift and policemen walked their same old beat. One thing we all had in common was that it was just another day. Then we were awakened.
As the news of the Horror settled over this Nation, we awoke from our naive innocence. The good people of America, citizen or not, were taken hostage by terror. No longer was the United States the safest place on Earth. We had been attacked on our homeland and life as we knew it had ceased.
Evil had brought this Country to its knees, but when it stood up, the anger raged.
So many stories have come to light and revealed the heroic nature of mankind when faced with his mortality. The firemen working two and three days straight. Red Cross volunteers organizing relief efforts. Airline passengers realizing their doom and sacrificing for their fellow man. There are too many to list.
The Hero that stays in my heart is the man in the Trade Center who stayed with his quadriplegic coworker. He wouldn't allow his friend to wait for death alone. They met their Lord together.
The questions that come from this are, "For how many people in your life would you make this sacrifice?" And "How many people in your life do you KNOW would make this sacrifice for you?" Tell your loved ones how much they mean in your life. Value your time together. Pray for Peace.
