In a few days a new 24/192 DAC kit based on the fabulous Burr Brown / TI PCM1794 current output DAC will be available. The RAKK DAC (Raleigh Audio - K&K Audio DAC) will be offered with a choice of passive transformer or active tube audio output stages, or you can design your own. The RAKK DAC "kit" will come as a completely assembled surface mount PC board. See the details at Digital Audio.
Lundahl Output Transformers Now Available With Amorphous Core
Lundahl Transformers is releasing their large core output transformers (LL1620/1623/1627/1679/9202) in an “AM” version manufactured with iron amorphous cores. This version provides enhanced audio performance based on the greater inherent magnetic homogeneity of amorphous materials. The normal crystal boundaries that develop in conventional magnetic materials when they are fabricated are absent from amorphous magnetic materials. This is accomplished by cooling the molten iron at a rate of one million degrees per second as it is formed. The absence of crystals that behave to some degree as autonomous magnetic entities, allows amorphous materials to magnetize and demagnetize in a more “linear”, coherent fashion.
The prototypes had a more transparent, wider bandwidth character than their already excellent silicon iron counterparts. The “speaker disappearing act” that is at the heart of excellent reproduced sound was even better with the amorphous core output transformers. This improvement is evidently entirely due to the core material, because all of the AM versions use coils and frames that are identical to those used in the standard silicon iron transformers.
The price is $325 for the LL1620/1623/1627/9202AM, while the LL1679AM is $330. Several part numbers are already in stock here.

The new Balanced Line Stage has made its debut. It uses LL1674s for both input and output transformers and the venerable 6N1P. It also sports a unique power supply topology. Of course, it is devastatingly transparent and vivid!
