This project began when my Son Ian said he was going to buy a Vrod or some other Harley. He wanted to buy something overseas and have it shipped over here to make a profit. You can buy HD's cheaper overseas, but by the time you get them here, pay the tax, do the needed modifications, pay for shipping, etc , it takes all the profit out of it. So I suggested we could build some kit bikes for fun and profit. So this is our project. He is in the Marine Corp and unable to be here for the build so I will be doing most of it myself. My buddy Dennis has shown up and helped quite a bit as well.
So, we begin. I did a lot of research on different offerings from different companies. There are a lot of places making kits now. Originally I wanted to order with Big Bear Choppers, not only because they have nice kits, but they are local to me and also come with VIN numbers. That is a big help come registration time. They offer a comparable if not indeed better kit than the Harcore II called the "Merc". It will set you back an additional 3500 clams or so and they were back ordered 8 weeks.
That is why we decided to go with the Hardcore. Custom Chrome didn't say anything about back orders and we wanted to have the bike ready for sale during the summer when there are more buyers. I ordered the kit from my web friend Tommy Summers in Minniapolis. He has a shop there called Lowriders by Summers and has been around for many years. Tommy gave me the best deal of anyone and gave the best service.
Unfortunately, it tooks us about 8 weeks to get the Hardcore kit anyway. Turns out they were back ordered on the fully polished motors from Revtec. This is about a 1000 dollar option and one that I could not see going without. I will say here that I don't know if I will be doing another one of these kits because I was thouroughly dissapointed in Custom Chrome's customer service skills. They would answer no questions after we dropped more than 13 grand with them. They don't even have a number for the distributor to call. He had to contact his CC rep and that guy only had limited ability to collect any information on delivery or back orders. I would expect better from a company the size of Custom Chrome who relies heavily on catalog orders. Okay, enough sniveling.
When the kit did arrive it came in a box 4' by 4.5' by 7 foot tall and wieghed 760 some odd pounds. They forked it on the back of my buddies pick up and we brought it home.
