William Perry Cottrell, the son of Silas and Sabra (Cox) Cottrell, was born June 17, 1838 and died November 4, 1919. William served the Union in the Civil War, enlisting in Co. B 9th W. Va. Infantry March 1, 1862 and re-enlisting as a Veteran Volunteer March 31, 1864 under General Order #191. He was wounded at Winchester Virginia August 2, 1864, transferred to Co. "I" 1st W. Va. Infantry and discharged July 21`, 1865. On May 23, 1860, he married Sarah White. Sarah, a daughter of William and Nancy (Deal) White, was born in Logan County, Virginia July 17, 1841 and died in Calhoun County WV March 8, 1873. After Sarah's death, William married Mary "Polly" Truman September 4, 1873. "Polly", a daughter of William and Juliana (Jarvis) Truman, was born in Lewis County, Virginia about 1848 and died August 21, 1915. Another source says William was a Methodist Minister and a "marrying preacher."
He was the father of William Thomas Cottrell.
