Tim Schantz, an ornithologist recognized for his dedication and expertise in birding, died suddenly of coronary artery disease on May 27, 2001 at the age of 36.  He died while guiding a birding tour to Gambell, on St. Lawrence Island off the coast of Alaska.

Tim had a consuming passion for birds and spent his life stuying them and sharing his love and knowledge with others.  He graduated from Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa and worked at Jewel Cave National Monument in South Dakota, Santa Anna Refuge in Texas, and Cordova Park at Red Rock Lake in Iowa.

He did research at Point Reyes Bird Observatory of the Farallon Islands off the coast of California, at the San Jouquin Field Station in Maderia California, on the National OceanicAtmospheric Administration Ship, Malcomb Baldridge, in the South Pacific, and for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.  He led many birding tour groups, especially in Alaska, to remote islands and key areas.

This web page is under reconstruction right now.  For information about Tim, the Tim Schantz Memorial Scholarship, or to apply for the scholarship, please email schantzbird@aol.com.
