Klinefelters in Rhode Island
Klinefelters in Rhode Island
About us
Hi,
I'm 34 and my husband is 36. WE have a 7 year son and a 4 year old daughter. On June 2,2000 (a date that I will never forget) we found out that our 6 year old son ( he turned 7 shortly after) was diagnosed 47XXY. He had something that was called Klinefelters Syndrome. That's all we knew walking out of the office. The doctor was kind enough to copy a page out of her medical book so we would have some information on the subject. After reading the page we were horrified, we thought that our little boy would grow up to be some kind of freak. He might grow breasts, have low IQ, turn violent, become a criminal and grow an unsually tall height. How could this happen to us? We were both from good families. This is something from the Jerry Springer Show.
Trying to accept the diagnosis
Well, after the initial shock and a very long crying session we turned to the internet for updated information.  We realized that it wouldn't be as bad as we thought. Sure we would go through some tough times , but then what parent doesn't?  Of course, we still had some issues to deal with.....We didn't tell anyone except for his grandparents.  WE didn't know how people would react.  But then it felt like we were keeping a secret. Then, after about two months of knowing, we decided to tell our closest family and friends. I gave them literature to read so they could understand what it really meant. Of course, just telling them- they didn't know what it was or what it meant. I wanted them to understand for themselves. It felt good to finally tell someone and all were supportive.  But honestly, no-one knows how it feels except for other parents of these xxy boys.  If you are a parent and need support we know what it feels like just finding out.  We know the feelings you have.  We understand.  WE have met lots of wonderful people just like you through the internet.  If you need help getting connected or just want to share your story, please don't hesitate writing to us. We all need support.

Introduction to Klinefelter Syndrome

Klinefelter Syndrome is a sex chromosome error found in males. The most consistent features are sterility, small testes, development of breast tissue, tall stature, and incomplete masculine body build. A male for whom sterility is the only obvious feature, may only be diagnosed as an adult during an infertility evaluation. During childhood a boy may exhibit behavior or learning problems before other clinical features develop leading to the discovery of Klinefelter syndrome: these boys need special assistance through the school years.
Characteristic Features: Many boys lack obvious features of Klinefelter syndrome. In childhood features may include incoordination, mild muscle weakness, small testes, mild obesity, poor school performance, and immature behavior. The physical characteristics can be so mild parents or physicians do not suspect anything seriously wrong. A chromosme study confirms the diagnosis.
