Hilda & Kenneth Morley's Welsh/Amerian Heritage.
We were born in the Welsh Coal Mining Valleys of South Wales in the British Isles in the late 1920s. Our Village was Six Bells near Abertillery and the time frame was between the 1st. and 2nd. World Wars in Europe between Great Britain and Germany. The 1st. World War ended on November 11, 1918 and the 2nd. World War started on September 3rd.,1939 and ended May 7th. 1945. Also it was the period when the Coal and Steel industries were at there peak and the Valleys were thriving.
We began our working lives when we were in our teens and during the 2nd. World War. Hilda when she was 15 years of age started as a grocery clerk in Rees's grocery store in Six Bells and myself at 16 years of age as a laboratory assistant at the Mining and Technical College, Crumlin after two plus years in the Abertillery Technical School.
In September 1946 I joined the British Army and served two years of National Service with the South Wales Borderers. After demobilization in 1948 started work as a Colliery Draughtsman at Cwmtillery Colliery servicing five collieries from Six Bells to Blaina.
In 1949 I joined Abertillery Rugby Club and played with them until 1958. During my time with the Club I captained the team for two years, obtained my Monmouthshire County Cap and was part of the 1953 combined rugby team of Abertillery and Ebbw Vale that played against the New Zealand, All Blacks touring team. Hilda during that time served on the Ladies Committee for the club.
Hilda and I were married on Saturday July 1st.,1950 at the Ebenezer Babtist Chapel in Abertillery by the Reverend Menai Williams. We lived with my parents for a short period of time, then in rooms at my Grand Mothers old house in Earl Street and then owned our first house at No. 2 Alexandra Terrace, Six Bells. In 1958 we moved into our 2nd. and brand new home in Lanaravon, Cwmbran.
In 1956 I joined Richard Thomas and Baldwins in their engineering draughting offices in Ebbw Vale where I became a section leader resposible for 16 designers and draughtsmen.
In September 1961 we emigrated to the United States of America and settled in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where I worked at Jones and Laughlin Steel Company engineering offices as a steel mill engineer. We travelled to the States by sea on the SS Rotterdam an ocean liner of the Holland American Line.
In 1967 we moved to Cleveland, Ohio where I joined Republic Steel Company as a project manager resposible for the enginnering and building of their $200 million 84 inch Hot Strip Mill and Water Treatment Facilities Plant.
After the completion of that facility we travelled extensively engineering, building and consulting for the Steel and Uranium Industies along with various engineering and construction companies. Finally aiding the Legal Community in resolving Engineering and Construction Disputes.
This took us all over the United States, Canada and Brazil before settling in California for over a decade before our retirement in 1993.
