Fairfax County Selasphorus sp.

First (?) Fairfax Co.

Selasphorus sp.

The bird was first identified in Vienna, Fairfax Co about 10/1/99, give or take a few days.  These photos were taken 11/4/99.  Directions to the feeder at the Martin's House can be found in the VA Birds archives.

Let me take this opportunity to thank the Martin's for their gracious hospitality to myself and other birders to view this very rare winter visitor.

On this photo, note the extensive rufous flanks which put this bird into the Selasphorus genus.  Other field marks not shown here are the 6 white tipped tail retrices indicative of a female or immature bird (the white tips are just visible in this photo).  Note that the tail extends beyond the folded wings, eliminating Calliope.   For more information goto the Sargent's Hummingbird page

This bird was subsequently banded and identified as an immature female Rufous Hummingbird.
