Karen X is a veteran performer of punk rock, poetry, producer of avant-garde events. The Dallas Poets Index describes her as “the neo-beat queen of the East Dallas poetry scene.” She has lived in Austin, Boston, Maine, Boulder, worked for the Swedish Cruise liner The Prince of Fundy. She spent ten years in Austin as a music writer for The Austin Sun, a gonzo-journalism magazine where she interviewed Iggy Pop, Albert King, BB King, Muddy Waters, Mose Allison,Tom Waits, Deborah Harry. She went to Paris with Bill Wisener when Ben Harper invited him to be his guest for his 3 sold out concerts, Thanksgiving, 2004. Her Coachella Music Festival reviews are published in Dallas Arts Review.
She sent a chapbook of her poems to Allen Ginsberg and he inivited her to meet him in Boulder to study as a Poetics Apprentice in 1980. They became old friends till his mourned death. As a special friend of Naropa Institute’s Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics, she co-produced Paris Records readings and recordings of Anne Waldman, Robert Creeley.
Her shouting poetics band The Panics, with Les Michaels, performed on the same bill as Flipper, Black Flag, Dead Kennedys and John Cale. She then developed a solo “contact improvisational recitation” act using a headmic and body contact with the audience and did a solo tour with Frank Black(The Pixies) and Rev Horton Heat with ambient music provided by Ministry, who was then living on a ranch outside Dallas.
She has performed at Caravan of Dreams and Sita di Limur’s Starck Club with Karen Finley and Laney Yarber, traveled to the Assiniboine Reservation in northern Montana to perform with Townes Van Zandt and Roxy Gordon. She has also performed at the Austin International Poetry Festival and in 1994 she was invited to read at Lollapollaza Music Festival. She has read and lectured in universities, galleries, museums, street corners, her house, their house and beyond.
Karen X produced Dial A Poet Television for four years featuring telephoned-in poetry
readings mixed-in the studio live with the work of the international ambient video movement. Jim Carroll, Allen Ginsberg, Gregory Corso in Rome, Michael McClure, Andrei Codrescu, Ed Sanders, Jello Biafro, Anne Waldman, are a few of its greatest hits. DPTV provided a valuable documentation of the poetry community coast to coast in the early 90s.
Karen is currently an adjunct creative writing instructor at Brookhaven Community College. She is also a Certified Yoga Instructor and yoga therapist. She teaches yoga and assists with ryt training at Priya Yoga, and private clients, acknowleges her teacher, Michelle Andrie, in the lineage of Krishnamacharya, Desakachar, Scaravelli, and is most recently a student of Angela Farmer. Karen is also a student of Dr. Kevin Gregg and an ambassador for his upcoming book, Ayurveda Now!
She is author of six chapbooks published by Wowapi and Paris Records, including How I Turned My Son Into A Dog, Speaking of Sita, Space Company, and Heroin Heroine/None Nun .
"I am deeply grateful for and I miss Allen Ginsberg----Allen Allen Always Allen!--but Robert (Creeley) and Anne (Waldman) too--Those human being to human being experiences are the stuff my heart is made of. I've recently moved into a new genre of writing and performing. I'm now more interested in the yoga communities--I think Allen still inspires and influences me to live my life in ongoing rigorous self-investigation and write its parallelisms..I try to let universal energy just move through me without the resistance of mental/emotional agenda and accept what comes. I call all this Contact Improvisational Body Text Poetry. I think of the breath as my pen and the muscles resistance as the stories, then collect them into body movement with narrative recitation of this history. Dig?"
