PLAINE J0ANE ... which sailed from suffolk england to james city VA in 1635........ the oldest known stegall of the line that originates from anson co. NC , was a hardshell baptist preacher named ... moses stegall (1734-1840)who came from cardiff england , who in his last will and testament lists 10 children ... thomas , george , james , martha , nancy , elizabeth , william , john , frances and solomon... of course , the question of concensus today , by some stegall researchers is ... " which child of moses stegall are you a decendant of ?"... and you ask ....... " who are we ? "

......... family history tells us that our line is of german - decent and with the features and namesakes of our family members it isnt hard to believe... one suggestion told , is that our name was formerly , von-stegall of germany and when we came to america the " von " was dropped to americanize our name. last and not least, it has been said , we are are of german-jew decent !

......our william p stegall , who i do not know where in NC , he was born ... but before 1828 , he met and married , mary ann henry of anson co. NC , afterwards they moved to ... perry co. TN ... where on the 1830 census he is listed as , wm stegald and wife with 1 female child (martha 1829). here the first 2 of their children were born. again in 1837 this family is listed on perry co. tax census as william p stigall ( misspellings were common even then ! ) ....... in neighboring henderson county TN was the community of stegall , whose original stegall settlers were our ancestors , the old people as told by the decendants of leroy rambert stegall. ....also in henderson county , was the city of darden TN , which was named after my gggggrandfather mills darden.
...the family were farmers and traveled on at least 2 occassions from perry co. TN to byhalia marshall co MS , where the family of william p stegall , appears on the 1840 marshall co. MS census , also the family's 5th child , frame wood stegall (1838)MS was born . also as our family moved from TN to MS , so did mary ann (henry) stegall 's brothers family , frame wood henry + frances c (stegall) henry ........ william p stegall and family is also listed on the 1841 and 1845 MS state census marshall co southern dist........ finally the last leg of their trip as told by family history handed down tells us that , we came from around memphis TN to jackson co. AR , cache township , with mary ann elizabeth w stegall (they were divorced) and their 5 children , arriving between 1845 and 1849.

JACKSON COUNTY

...Jackson county was named for , general andrew jackson , on nov. 5 1829 , by legislation of the territory of arkansas.... jackson co. was located in the mississippi river valley rich lands , situated between the arkansas and white rivers. it had a predominately rural population with an economy reliant on cotton .
... in 1832 the county seat was Litchfield , then in1839 it was moved to the city of , Elizabeth (which is presently UNDER the white river ). in 1852 the county seat was moved to Augusta , the next year in 1853 it was moved again to Jacksonport , and finally the county seat became , Newport , AR where it has since remained.


ARKANSAS

... ARKANSAS was first discovered in 1541 , by hernando de soto...and the first permanent settlement was established by henri de tonti , in 1686 , known as the " arkansas post "... next arkansas became part of the U. S. in 1803 , as part of the , louisiana purchase.
... In 1836 , Arkansas became the 25th state.

... in the beginning of the civil war , may 1861 , arkansas , seceded from the union and the provisional congress , divided the state into , eastern and western districts , with seats at little rock and van buren , respectively...
... the most decisive battle in arkansas , was at pea ridge on march 7-8 1862 , one of the most largest fought , west of the mississippi river , involving over 27,000 troops.... and then , by late 1862 , van buren was taken and the battle for little rock , ended on sept. 10 1863.
... in our very own , Jackson county , civil war was evident , at camp cache , in the city of Jacksonport , which was occupied by both confederate and union armies , due to it's strategic position (where the black and white rivers meet), accessible both to the mississippi and arkansas rivers...... however , at the end of the war , on june 5 1865 , CSA general jeff thompson , " Swampfox of the confederacy " , surrendered with some 6,000 troops , at jacksonport.

....... i was a lad and went with my step-father john h stegall to a camp near mcneal's steam mill where the company rendevouzed , in the southern part of clark co. AR , about 25 miles from our home which was in the northern part of the county. i went along to bring back the saddle horse my stepfather rode to the camp. while i am not absolutely sure that , frame wood stegall was at the camp while i was there , yet, my recollection is that he was. my stepfather was with the company about 3 years , most of the time east of the mississippi river , and in all his letters written home to my mother he , he rarely , if ever failed to mention his brother frame wood stegall , as being with the company and the state of his health ...... in 1864 , every 25th man in the army in which my stepfather
and frame wood stegall belonged , was given a 60-day furlough to go home . the army drew lots and frame wood , was one of the lucky men in his company. frame wood stegall , being a single man , gave his right of furlough to my stepfather john h stegall . on my stepfather's return home he informed us how he obtained the furlough, and said he left frame wood stegall ,with the company.

........ (4) william a stegall (1833)MS ......in 1861 joined the confederate army as did his brothers , however young william met an early death , only after 10 days of service !
... the book " FIGHT AND SURVIVE , THE CIVIL WAR IN JACKSON COUNTY " by elizabeth watson 1974 p.19-20 , tells the story .
........... a eulogy to willie stegall age 21 "drowned " 11-20-1861 ... willie was the son of william p stegall and mary ann elizabeth stegall of cache twp. he embarked from jacksonport up the black river , just above lauratown , willie fell off the boat.
here is the poem published in the newspaper......
............. willie stegall , age 21 confederate soldier 1861 ... " the southern war had just begun , there came a call for all to go and fight for southern rights , you know. one wedensday morning as you can see , this young man joined his company they then marched out to jacksonport , expecting there to take a boat. accordingly the boat was there , he went aboard , i do declare and bid adieu to all his friends not thinking of his awful end. young william was up on deck nobody knows but we expect, that he got tangled as he fell and bid his friends a long farewell. down in the awful deep he went to save himself was his intent. oh lord! oh lord! he cried lord jesus save if i must die....... a letter then quickly wrote and then sent back by another boat. the grief of his sisters i can't express to hear of their dear brother's death. he was found in a fort night or more a hanging fast by the shore. his brother-in-law then took him home and buried him by his father's tomb. "

(4) leroy rambert stegall (1848)MS ........the following are written family history excerts from several of his decendants , primarily through his son , louie ross stegall (1886)TX. .......written feb. 4 1963... by his wife eulah , as dictated by him just before he passed away , made available to us by , E H stegall jr. ........." the stegall's originally came from holland 200 years ago. there the name was stigall , they had 12 boys and 1 girl . the girl was born on the ship coming to america. this family of 15 settled in stegall TN , my grandparents are buried there.... they had 4 sons and 1 daughter , francis she was blind all her adult life buried by husband and my uncle billy york . john stegall was a fine old methodist minister who is buried at afton TX. perry stegall was in the civil war and never located . frame stegall died ay phx AZ . leroy stegall , my father, who married mary jane harrison .... leroy rambert died young at 44 years old of a stroke , leaving his wife mary and 8 children struggling to survive ..........gladys marie stegall stacy ( daughter of john atlas stegall ) writes ... grandma stegall (mary jane harrison ) lived her later years with her youngest daughter , violet stegall green. i remember hearing grandma telling us grandpa leroy rambert , was of german decent. he was a messenger boy during the civil war, and after the war , homesteaded in jones co. TX durin the big land rush... grandma was not german and boasted to her children that she was not! she said ," germans are stubborn and domineering"......... the book , " KNOWING WHO YOU ARE AND YOUR IDENTITY " , by gladys m stegall stacy 1980.......
mona sue stegall sanford traces her history , starting in germany entering america in new york to virginia onto north carolina then mississippi through moses stegall by his son solomon.

... decendants of miles darden, heftiest of all human beings of whom there is a record , lived in jackson co. AR.... cora stegall , milzie stegall and pearl stegall were the great-grandchildren of the NC giant who lived in the first half of the 19th century. darden was featured in a issue of , john hix , strange as it seems. ... darden was born 1798 , was not the tallest man who ever lived , although he towered , 7 feet 6 inches . his remarkable size was mostly in his girth. his coat would easily go around three 200 lb. men and , buttoned. ... darden weighed more than 1,000 lbs..... his traditional breakfast consisted of , 40 biscuits , a pound of butter , 2 1/2 lbs of bacon , and 18 eggs , washed down with 3 quarts of coffee...... the collosus was active and able to work until he was 55. he married twice and had several children . none of his children attained his gigantic proportions. ... during the last 2 years of his life, darden was hauled about in a two-horse wagon. he died in 1857 henderson co. TN.

..... my gggrandpa ... was the first of our family line to be born in arkansas and was a twin .... his parents were william p and rebecca stegall married in jackson co. both of whom were previously married giving young perry a combined 8 step-brothers/sisters , most of whom moved further west into TEXAS blanco co. by 1880... leaving perry presley stegall as the sole heir of the stegall surname remaining in jackson co AR .
..... on sept. 22 1854 william and rebecca gave birth to twins perry and fannie . these young children were less than 7 years old when they lost there parents and raised by there older step-sister margaret stegall (1835)TN who had married wealthy farmer atlas j dodd and had 2 children of their own william lindley and martha florence who later marries R P watson. .......fannie , however can not be found after 1862.

AR , nov. 20 1861 only after 10 days of service...... not much is known about young "willie" . it does seem though that his favorite companion was his brother-in-law , william c york . ... willie had joined the same CSA regiment as wm c york ... in the euology of william a stegall after his death it was wm c york who had retrieved his dead body for a family burial ... and in the WILL of william a stegall , wm c york is the signing witness.

... perry presley stegall (1854)AR lived with his dodd relatives until 1872 when he homesteaded 40 acres from the state of AR. perry was an enterprizing young man who would purchase lands for a lumber contract, making good money and then afterwards , still having the land , to plant primarily cotton then corn and hay

......3 years later he married mary v darden of TN.... in 1879 their first surviving child , milzie milton stegall was born ...our great-grandfather ...

the following year perry and mary purchased 400 acres from atlas j dodd at $5 an acre...... the dodd farm , was in the greenhaw area near tuckerman , and by 1870 was valued at a lofty , $ 30,000. covering in excess of 6,000 acres.

in 1883 a 2nd child was born cora a e stegall.

also in this year perry sells various lands to T S stephens , my gg uncle on my mom's side ... sharon a stephens .

in 1887 their 3rd child is born pearl p stegall.

... unfortunately sometime before 1888, there was an accident at the stegall sawmill in which a hired hand had been injured . to avoid possible loss of the farm by legalities , the property was changed over in the name of the wife , M V stegall.
the next year 1888 perry and mary purchase 80 acres from R P watson , listed as M V stigall on the 1890 tax census.

.... by the turn of the century, times were getting good for the family , perry and mary stegall had 3 children milzie , cora and pearl and soon would have some 1200 acres of working farm and timberland ... the family also raised young ward , ambrose white.... a few years later the family opens a general store at stegall AR . the store was located , just north of the curve of stegall road ( AR hwy 384 )on the westside , which later included a post office and put stegall , AR on the map... the store existed until about 1953 , which was eventually owned and operated by their son pearl p stegall(1887). he married the former mary callie camp of johnstown.

... farmering was a way of life and a means of support for people in those days , but like all... fun times were their too , according to 91 year old stegall resident , marvin wilson , who says , on saturday night , a fair share of music playing , drinking and fighting of course took place, ... or was it drinking , music playing and then fighting (either way , it's the little things that make life fun )... both milzie and perry's instument of choice was the mandolin , but any stringed instrument would do .

...seriousness was also present , perry and mary donated 1 1/2 acres on 10-27-1905 , for a school to be built at the westside of the intersection of david combs road and macedonia road , and eventually having about 75 students, whose names mostly appear on this family page. ( the 1st school house built was on david combs road , 2 blocks east on the south side.) vera stegall (1911) and B F carter (1880)were teachers at the school which went up to the 8th grade. B F carter was known for his exquisite hand-writing...... then in april of 1907, cora a e stegall , marries B F " frank " carter and lives on the property in stegall , at what would be the modern day intersection of , stegall road and maceadonia road , on the east side... ... during the 1940's , newport school system annexed stegall and bused students into town...
... on maceadonia road next to the 2nd stegall school , was the church of christ , which our early families attended , sisters virgie (bruton) stegall and tennis (bruton) campbell usually saw to the pastors and social needs for the church.

... perry presley stegall , known as " uncle perry " , was a religious man , with intelligence and compassion , who was well aware of the laws that governed his daily decisions , which is easily evident in historical records , that document his accomplishments .... he was a man who had to constantly expand and grow , borne of a past generation that demanded never ending determination from dawn to dusk , with a drive to provide for him and his family....... even to his death , perry presley stegall was hard at work , in his sawmill , when a pulley and strap had broke loose and severely striking him in the chest. perry presley stegall fought death for nearly a week and died on , july 25th , 1911.

jan. 23 , 1928 ... gladys juanita "juanita" clarece stegall , was the 8th and last child born to milzie milton stegall + virgie (bruton) stegall.

over the years the family liked to visit , heber springs AR cleburne co. , located in the eastern ozark mountains , to enjoy the natural spring water .... while , on one such trip , aug. 28 1928 mary " mollie " virginia (darden) stegall , gently past away , at the age of 69.

oct. 25 1928 ... our great-grandfather , milzie milton stegall , lived a comparatively short life of 49 years , when he died. ... sadly i do not know very much about the man called " milge ".... although there is no marker at this time , milge was buried next to his parents , perry and mollie stegall at the tims-parrott cemetery SE of tuckerman.
... at the time of this writing , his daughter , juanita (stegall) jones , is still yet living , she was born the year of her father's death 1928.

... on sunday , the families would all meet at the ballpark in stegall AR . the baseball diamond was on the Biggs farm , southeast of the maceadonia and david combs road intersection.
the stegall team included , M L stegall as pitcher (who was majorleague material) , perry d stegall , frank carter and a young ... george kell (played professional baseball) .... on sunday an opposing team from swifton , tuckerman or other small town would travel to stegall AR , to PLAY BALL.

mrs nora maglene ( honey ) stegall - raper 77
of newport , died tuesday may 10 in newport AR
she was a homemaker and a member of jacksonport baptist church.
nora was the daughter of thomas and mary ( anderson ) honey of stegall AR.
she was preceded in death by her husband perla raper , she is survived by five sons,
bob stegall of benton , david stegall of jacksonport , thomas stegall of springdale ,
don stegall of hot springs and jerry walker of tenneessee , one daughter camilla white
of benton, four sisters katie cathey and clara fraser of newport , gracie fraser of of north
little rock , and audrey taylor of , two brothers arvin honey of newport and adolph honey
of florida , 12 grandchildren , 14 great-grandchildren.
funeral services were held thursday may 12 at jacksoport baptist church,
with rev. billy ed morris officiating and rev. l c meuir assisting. pallbearers were scott stegall,
larry stegall , gary stegall , cecil foshee , bernie clark and harry grizzle.
honary pallbearers were pete draper , bill jones , dan ryles , j d smart and troy jones.
burial was in walnut grove cemetery.
