Detroit Author Conrad V. Sucatre presents copies of his book OLD SCHOOL ROMANCE to Kathleen Mahinske, manager of the BOOKS CONNECTION bookstore at 19043 Middlebelt Road in Livonia, Michigan.  She carries numerous books by Michigan authors on her Local Author shelves.
A twenty year military veteran, with time spent in both the Navy as a Seabee and the Coast Guard as a ship's cook, I've also been a long-time fan of romance fiction.  That might be surprising, considering my rugged service career.  But when it came to fiction, I was a sucker for love stories.  Romance and science fiction were my two favorite reading pastimes in my youth.  I always thought written romance began with Harlequin, until one day I stumbled across some old Pulp magazines of the 1940s in a used book store.
Their titles surprised me:  Ranch Romances and Rangeland Romances.  I had always believed that western romances didn't exist in print until the 1970s.  The fact that there were romance magazines at all in the distant past was something new to me too.  This began a quest that would last several years and fill my private library up with crumbling magazines and dusty books long out of print.   I  discovered that there once existed, long before Harlequin, a thriving and popular romance fiction industry, complete with best-selling authors, most of whom have been forgotten for about forty or fifty years.  Authors who won prestigous awards and in some cases changed the course of literary history.  One writer had a dozen big-budget movies based on her work and even hosted an early television show.  Another romance writer of the old days was once the highest paid author in the world!
What surprised me even more was how modern-sounding the older books could be.  They often dealt with issues that are still debated today.  A host of romance novels from 1914 thru 1939 dealt with women in the workplace.  The once-popular nurse  novels grew out of this trend.  (Lucy Agnes Hancock, who's forgotten today, was the queen of nurse romances in the 1940s.)  Faith Baldwin, the most popular romance writer of the 1930s, frequently expressed strong feminist views in books with titles like He Married a Doctor and Men Are Such Fools.  One of her most famous bestsellers, Skyscraper, has recently been reprinted by FEMINIST PRESS .

Armed with all this information, I put all I'd learned into a book of my own, OLD SCHOOL ROMANCE, the cover of which you can see to the right. I submitted it to Vintage Romance Publishing of South Carolina and was overjoyed that it was accepted right off the bat, of which I am eternally grateful.  It is my sincere wish that this book revives in the older form of romantic fiction, and prevents the many, many talented writers of the old days from falling into obscurity.  They deserve recognition for setting the stage for the romance novel industry we all know and love today.
