WATCHDOG GROUPS: Adoption Issues for Gays & Single People
I live in New York and from time to time, tune into political news channels such as FoxNews, C-Span, CNN, etc. On May 9, 2001, on the FoxNews Channel, the one-hour debate show entitled "Hannity & Colmes" had a short segment about the presently controversial study of how "sexual orientation can be changed." (transcripts of the show can be found on the website Foxnews.com). The guest on this particular topic was none other than Rev. Jerry Falwell. In this segment, I truly found Sean Hannity to be irresponsible and discriminatory when he chose to make a statement that gay people and single people should NOT be allowed to adopt children. I think gay people, gay-friendly people, and single people need to speak out on this! (How narrow-minded and wrong for people who care and have a heart and want to adopt children! How sad for children who need caring adults)!

Powerful news organizations such as FoxNews needs to be responsible in their "debate" shows and discriminatory statements by certain political commentators are simply harmful to humanity as a whole. Irresponsible media professionals, who appear to strive for ratings, before thinking about real life people of varying cultures and backgrounds, should be confronted and reprimanded. (Sometimes it's spontaneous and one just doesn't "think before they speak," but others clearly make statements with the intention to harm another persons psyche or with other hidden agendas to ease their own personal fears and prejudices).

Yes, everyone is entitled to their opinions and beliefs. Yes, Hannity & Colmes is a debate show, but when this particular topic was presented, there was absolutely no debate going on. It was presented by Mr. Hannity and Rev. Falwell that being gay is simply wrong (no ifs-ands-or buts) and also that gay people and single people should not be parents. America is made up of diversified people and clearly, not all gay people and single people are irresponsible. Adoption should be based on individual cases and merits, not because of sexual orientation and/or marital status. We are all human and no one is perfect, and there are certainly unfit people who should not be allowed to adopt children. However, I believe segments like this show are damaging and destructive.

Unfortunately, I believe the statements made by Mr. Hannity and Rev. Falwell in this segment are just the beginning of the political litmus test against gays adopting children. I also believe that more negative findings against homosexuals may occur in the "news" soon, in order to help the EXTREME CONSERVATIVE AGENDA in getting a very conservative Justice into the U.S. Supreme Court. Unfortunately, as long as powerful news organizations, political commentary personnel, and religious leaders can get news coverage and are able to present the gay community and other minority cultures in distorted and misguided ways (and hide behind the facade of religion to scare & control others), our world will not become a better place of peace and harmony. Fortunately, we are doing better these days in the media and on TV, although we still have quite a way to go in the religious radio/news political commentary area dominated by religious right conservatives.

I am not sure what direction we are headed as far as helping to prevent or even curb powerful political and/or religious collaborators that clearly discriminate against the gay community and other minority groups. However, I do believe organizations such as GLAAD, Human Rights Campaign, Human Rights Commission, NAACP, etc. are definitely helping to educate the public and promote fair and accurate representation of all people. I do believe the more news and tv coverage that our gay community leaders (gay and gay-friendly, including gay Christians and/or other gay religious leaders, and celebrities) can expose themselves to, the more we can battle unfair and discriminatory propaganda and laws.
