Spiritual Mission for Living
September 2000 - Concern of the Month
The Next U.S. President
When one thinks of politics it’s almost like being on automatic pilot to think of either voting (if one votes) Democratic or Republican.  It’s that idea of being in a political box and thinking either black or white with no gray in between. Sure, we do have other (mostly unknown) political parties on the ballet box, but the majority of Americans do think either Democratic or Republican and along goes all the stereotypes that fit into these roles.
This year we vote for a new President and Vice President.  Rather than name names or state which political party you should vote for, my biggest hope is that if you decide to vote, you will look into your heart and pick the best person for the job - and not vote solely because one is a registered Democrat or Republican.  Truly reflect on who will do the best job for the people of this Country.  There are poor and starving people in this Country (and all over), there are Senior Citizens who are barely able to meet their living expenses because of the medical bills they must meet and which social security is and always has helped to supplement their needs, and there are spiritual issues that need our attention in helping to heal the mentally ill, those with addictions, reduce crime, and helping to bring better reforms toward rehabilitation to those who are criminally institutionalized (as well as a bunch of other issues in this Country that need to be addressed).
Who will guide us and put the taxes we pay toward the good of the American people?  I have to say, it is easy to say you don’t want to pay higher taxes, no one does, but if you really think about it, taxes are helping the poor and those who cannot afford the simple luxuries in life that most of us take for granted (even this luxury of owning a computer and being on-line).  By paying taxes, you are giving back your dues for things that you so enjoy in this lifetime.  It is true that corruption and scandals exist on all levels of politics, but if you continue to hold this view you will be limiting your own self and not opening yourself to what GOOD already EXISTS in our government.  If you are not wanting to pay taxes because you think that you are working hard for someone else’s benefit - you are partially right - and that doesn’t make it bad!  And yes, there will always be people to take advantage of what the government has to offer using our tax money, but you can’t let that affect your responsibility toward helping those in need, whether you know them or not.  So if putting tax money back into your own pocket sounds better than helping someone in need, then you know which way to vote.
For those who are already poor and have nowhere to turn except temporarily to the government, go ahead and take away tax funds so their families can continue to starve and continue to live in poverty.  Go ahead and give tax rebates back to the upper/middle/married (all privileged in this life) class of people so they can continue to live “high on the hog”.  For those who are elderly (soon to be all of us assuming we reach a ripe age in this life) ask yourself if you really want to change social security funding so that seniors get even LESS than what they already get... These are issues which I really hope you explore within your heart... Remember - these are issues that will affect each and every one of us in the years to come.
Let us not forget that the new President will be able to appoint not one, not two, but THREE Justices of the Supreme Court.  Do you know how this may affect our Country?  I am not saying we should be a totally liberal country and have a free-for-all liberal Justice System - this simply won’t happen regardless (that’s why there are laws), but consider this...  If you vote Highly Conservative, meaning you base your vote mainly on the toughest stance on the issues of Abortion, Homosexuality, the Death Penalty, and Religion, you may find that the next President will appoint Highly Conversative Judges which will, in all likelihood, end up making decisions and laws that will hurt the very people who surround your world, your family, your neighbors, your friends.  Remember, people who are already responsible individuals will most likely make responsible “choices” if guided in the right direction.  Taking away choices, simply means that - taking away CHOICES and OPTIONS.  Do you want to live in a box because I don’t!
If it turns out that our Highest Court goes back to the olden days and no longer wants to accept a woman's right to choose, or the view that gay people should not be entitled to certain rights, or force prayer into the schools, we might as well go back to the War Zone as I truly believe we would be taking gigantic steps backwards in this world.  I believe that should this happen, we would have many protests and fighting for basic freedoms that the new generation will have to face consistently.  Here we come full circle back to your heart of hearts.  The spiritual side of deciding the fate of the next generation and the new President to be.  I myself am not saying I believe in abortion, but I certainly believe it is someone’s choice to decide, especially as a woman.  As far as the race and gay issue, everyone should have basic rights and no one should have to deal with obvious hate messages, outright prejudices and all that ignorant stuff that goes along with these issues.  If our highest Court went totally conservative, you can bet that basic Freedom of Choice will be take away from the People.  Is this what the people really really want?
There are some hardcore political issues that people just either think black or white about (abortion, homosexuality, religion, death penalty, etc.), but more than anything, all of us are affected negatively by the extreme views on any of these issues.  Right now, we need to address the spiritual issues of those who need the help from those of us who are more privileged in this lifetime (someone is always more privileged than another).  The core is really when you come down to it is helping the poor, the elderly, the children, and not giving more to the rich who can already afford to do whatever  they want... Do you want to see your children struggle against prejudice and let the government make more decisions in your life as opposed to the People being able to make responsible choices in their own lives?  Freedom is something spiritual that I don’t believe God ever wants us to give up to those who want to control us rather than give the People of this Country the option to choose what’s best for ourselves and those people and neighbors whom we love...
Blessings to you - Vote with Your Heart       :)
