Well, you've come this far, you must
want to know something.
I am an Assistant Director in
Hollywood.
Sounds important right? Mostly that means I do a lot of
paperwork, get to work on some fun shows, and hang out with
some interesting, and a few not-so interesting people.
What IS an Assistant Director, you
ask?
Now that's a good question. Simply put, an Assistant
Director is the on-set manager for the production company.
Typically there is a First Assistant Director, a Key Second
Assistant Director and a Second Second Assistant Director.
Our job is to make sure the director gets all the work done
for the day that he or she wants. That means we schedule the
day's work, make sure cast and crew are where they should be
when they should be there, and make sure all the elements
needed are there. That means making sure the costumers and
the property folks and the grips and electricians and the
camera department all know where we are working, what we are
working on and most importantly to any production, what time
lunch is.
I am a Second Assistant
Director.
My job includes fascinating things like scheduling the
next days work, directing all the extras in a scene,
supervising the make-up and hair process with the actors,
schedule the cast arrival times, pass out countless pages of
revisions, announcments, schedules, and other assorted
things, making a million phone calls at the end of the day
and solving a dozen different problems all at once. Usually
these things all happen at the same time.
I am currently working on.. well, my
vacation.. got a show for me?
I have recently been a Second Assistant Director for the
new installment of Star Trek, called Enterprise.
I have spent a lot of time on some sitcom's, including
NewsRadio.
I also have worked on Star
Trek:Voyager now and then along with a variety of other
shows. Work is good.
Who am I?
Wow, you are full of good questions today. Okay, my life
in a paragraph. I was born. I grew up. I went to
school. I went to college. After college, I worked
around Florida as a television news photograper. When taking
pictures of dead people, car wrecks, city council meetings,
and pretty weather pictures no longer interested me,
I began freelancing. I shot commercials, weddings,
documentaries (Ask me about my six months in Ecuador
sometime) and basically anything anyone would pay me to
shoot (Don't ask me about that.) During this time, I began
taking the Assistant Directors Training Program test. After
several tries, they finally relented and let me in, and I
completed two wonderful years of on the job training at low
pay and long hours. I graduated from the Training Program
and now enjoy my life as an Assistant Director.
What is the Assistant
Directors Training
Program?
Well, they made their own web site, find it on my Links
page and go see. If you are interested, get an
application.
