The dark shadow moves her fear, No protection, afar or near. Clinging to a helpless hand, She stumbles thru a faultless land, Filled with colorless grains of sand, With drifting winds pushed by man. Storms of thunder block the way, Nourished by the world's delay, The hopeless plight denies relay, Yet in my heart I hear her say, As I walk away, Mommy, why does it rain? "So life can flow" Mommy, why does it rain? "So trees can grow" Oh my woe, no light today. I hear her say as I walk away, Mommy, why does it rain? "So we can see rainbows" Mommy, why does it rain? "I can't see my shadow" Oh the pain, no light today, Echoes I hear as I walk away, Mommy, why does it rain? I want to know. Mommy, why does it rain Where flowers grow. Guiding spirit light the way, Knowing the violence I walk away In search of an answer To a question No one heard, Why does it rain? Dedicated to all women and children who have suffered the trauma and scars of violence. With special dedication to the peoples of Kosovo, And the children in Colorado, and tomorrow.
