Gold Dust Friend

I lie in bed removed from time,
Not sharing thoughts now on my mind.
Weak inside with hurt and grief,
In no one's home I find relief.

Destructive pity in my soul,
No movement towards a stated goal.
Dormat, lonely, passive fool,
To others I'm removed and cool.

No one made me turn this way,
I chose to have a nothing day.
My mind plays tricks, but really not,
I have control but I choose not.

There were times when life was good.
I made my way and tall I stood.
Satisfaction deep within,
Made giving fun and life a friend.

Care free in my college days,
In Johnny Carson I made A's.
I traveled to the eastern coast,
A gold dust twin I was to most.

But fleeting memories can't replace,
This sad feeling I now face.
A Mom, a wife, a home - not now.
Too much at once, I don't know how

To push myself back up the hill,
For all I had did fall and spill,
Upon my soul that is not strong,
My Lord does test, did I go wrong.

Where is that girl who smiled within?
What happened to the gold dust twin?

It is said that too often we make acquaintances, but not true friends.
While in college, I was fortunate to find a true friend.
She is always there for me and I for her,
be it a short drive away, or a phone call across thousands of miles.
Regardless of the length of time between visits,
we always pick up where we left off, as if we saw each other yesterday.
The strength of our friendship has helped each of us overcome
many of life's unfortunate circumstances.
I wrote this poem for her at a time when she was experiencing life's pain.

Following is the last part of the poem.

I think sometimes we never change,
Just our thoughts are rearranged.
If life sparks promise to be true,
I know someday you'll not be blue.
Jan, from a friend who's been there too,
You picked me up and helped me thru.
The hope in me that you had then,
Now lives inside your gold dust twin.

Today, my friend has recovered from her personal life trauma.
We still lean on each other when life gives us lemons.
Following our individual paths, respecting each our differences,
without judgement of the other, we will always be true friends,
accepting each other "as is".
