Maxi's history
Max is an imported Moluccan Cockatoo, approximately 16-20 years old. Max began her life in the United States in Maryland where she and her owners were completely devoted to each other for 8 years. Her companion then went to work on a full time basis and Max was provided a cage for housing which she never had before. Max did not accept this well and took to screaming. Next, Max's cage was covered. Since she was covered from dusk til' dawn, Max started to pick her feathers. With the frustration level high, they decided to turn Max over to a local pet store and after spending 2 years there, she was finally given a home by Parrot Rescue of Harrisburg.
Max was given a warm home with lots of companionship but still she persisted in "plucking." She was also converted to a pelleted diet during this time but it did not solve all her troubles.
Max, being an older, mature bird did not adhere well to the "social change" brought on by her original mistress and Parrot Rescue was very careful in selecting an adoptive family for her.

Her New Life
Maxi's official adoption took place on February 11, 2000. It was a heart-retching experience for both the Parrot Rescue and myself. I wondered if I could "do" this bird justice after all she had been through.

Max Today
Max was subjected to her Avian Veterinarian 1 month after adoption. All of her lab and viral testing came back strong and negative. She has been converted to Harrison's Bird Diet but is given fresh fruits and vegetables as treats. I am happy to say that Max is adjusting well. Oh! by the way, ........ DNA sexing revealed that Maxwell is a girl. Her name has been shortened to just "Maxi," but I call her "Boober."
