Potpourri Pie

Materials:
About 3 ounces of camel colored worsted weight yarn
Crochet hook size G, or size needed for gauge
Yarn needle
Hot glue gun and glue
9” aluminum pie pan
2-2 1/2 dry qts. of fruit or spice scented potpourri
15” tulle circle
needle and thread to match yarn
Bottom “crust”
Ch 4, join with a sl st to form ring
Round 1: Ch 3 to count as the first dc, work 11 more dc in the ring; join
with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3. (12 dc)
Round 2: Ch 3 to count as the first dc, dc in the same st as joining; work 2
dc in each dc around; join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3. (24
dc)
Round 3: Ch 3 to count as the first dc, (2 dc in the next dc, dc in the next
dc) 11 times, 2 dc in the last dc; join with a sl st to the top of the beginning
ch 3. (36 dc)
Round 4: Ch 3 to count as the first dc, dc in the next dc, 2 dc in the next
dc, (dc in each of the next 2 dc, 2 dc in the next dc ) 11 times; join with a
sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3. (48 dc)
Round 5: Ch 3 to count as the first dc, dc in each of the next 2 dc, 2 dc in
the next dc, (dc in each of the next 3 dc, 2 dc in the next dc ) 11 times;
join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3. (60 dc)
Round 6: Ch 3 to count as the first dc, dc in each of the next 3 dc, 2 dc in
the next dc, (dc in each of the next 4 dc, 2 dc in the next dc ) 11 times;
join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3. (72 dc)
Round 7: Ch 3 to count as the first dc, dc in each of the next 4 dc, 2 dc in
the next dc, (dc in each of the next 5 dc, 2 dc in the next dc ) 11 times;
join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3. (84 dc)
Round 8: Working in the front loops only, ch 3 to count as the first dc, dc in
each of the next 12 dc, 2 dc in the next dc, (dc in each of the next 13 dc, 2
dc in the next dc) 5 times; join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3.

Round 9: Working in the front loops only, ch 3 to count as the first dc, dc in
each of the next 13 dc, 2 dc in the next dc, (dc in each of the next 14 dc, 2
dc in the next dc) 5 times; join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3.

Round 10: (Fluted “crust” round)Ch 1, sc in the same st as joining, ch 5,
skip next 2 dc, sc in the next dc, turn, sc in each of the 5 chs, turn, sc in
the 2nd skipped dc on round 9, *ch 5, skip next unworked dc on round 9, sc
in the next dc, turn, sc in each of the 5 chs, turn, sc in the skipped dc on
round 9* Repeat from * to * 46 times; ch 5, skip the last unworked dc on
round 9, sc from the front into the first skipped dc of the round, turn, sc in
each of the 5 chs, turn, sc in the last skipped dc; join with a sl st to the first
sc. Fasten off. weave in ends.
Lattice top “crust” pieces
The length of these pieces is important. If yours is different, use a different
size hook.
Make 4 of these (each finished piece should measure 7” long):
Ch 26
Row 1: Dc in the 4th ch from hook and in each ch across. Fasten off. Weave
in ends. (23 dc) (These are pieces A)
Make 4 of these (each finished piece should measure 8” long):
Ch 30
Row 1: Dc in the 4th ch from hook and in each ch across. Fasten off. Weave
in ends. (27 dc) (These are pieces B)
Make 2 of these (each finished piece should measure 9” long):
Ch 34
Row 1: Dc in the 4th ch from hook and in each ch across. Fasten off. Weave
in ends. (31 dc) (These are pieces C)
Assembly:
Step 1: Lay the large round piece in the pie pan. Shape piece to fit pan
evenly. Lift half the piece and hot glue the center to the center of the pie
pan. Tack with hot glue around the bottom perimeter of the pan. Hot glue
the “fluted crust” to the rim of the pie pan.
Step 2: Pour the potpourri into the “crust” in the pie pan. Spread evenly,
mounding the potpourri in the center of the “pie”.
Step 3: Lay the tulle circle over the potpourri. Attach the outer edge of the
tulle to the “pie crust” just below the “fluted crust” with a running stitch.
Step 4: The strips from week 1 will form our lattice top. Arrange according
to the diagram, then hot glue or sew the edges of the strips just below the
“fluted crust.”
To give this as a Thanksgiving hostess gift, put the pie in a bakery box
(most bakeries will sell you one), and add a fall-colored ribbon and bow!
Other ideas: You can decorate your pie plate to match your kitchen before
you assemble your pie. (Sponge paint, decoupage, etc.) or you can
substitute a 10” terra cotta or plastic plant saucer for the pie pan for a
designer look.
