Christmas Wreath Potholder, Hotpad and Dishcloth by Priscilla Hewitt ©1999
Materials: Worsted weight cotton yarn white (or natural), green and red Crochet hook size G for potholder; size H for hotpad; size I for dishcloth Yarn needle
Gauge: Potholder: Rounds 1-3 = 3 Hotpad: Rounds 1-3 - 3 1/4" Dishcloth: Rounds 1-3 = 3 1/2
Finished size: Potholder: about 8 1/4 Hotpad: about 9" Dishcloth: about 9 1/2
For potholder (make 2): With size G hook and white ch 4, join with a sl st to form ring
Round 1: Ch 3 to count as first dc, work 11 more dc in ring; join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3 (12 dc)
Round 2: Ch 3 to count as first dc, work dc in same st as joining; work 2 dc in ea dc around; join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3 (24 dc)
Round 3: Ch 3 to count as first dc, work dc in same st as joining; (1 dc in the next dc, 2 dc in the next dc) 11 times, dc in the last dc; join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3 (36 dc)
Round 4: Ch 3 to count as first dc, work dc in same st as joining; (1 dc in each of the next 2 dc, 2 dc in the next dc) 11 times, dc in the last dc; join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3 (48 dc). Fasten off white.
Round 5: Attach green with a sc to any dc; sc in each dc around. (48 sc)
Round 6: (Beading round) Ch 4 to count as first dc and ch 1; (dc in next dc, ch 1) 47 times; join with a sl st to the third ch of the beginning ch 4 (48 dc and 48 ch 1 spaces)
Round 7: Ch 1, sc in the same st as joining; (skip next dc, 5 dc shell in the next dc, skip next dc, sc in the next dc) 11 times; skip next dc, 5 dc shell in the next dc, skip next dc, sl st in the first sc (12 shells)
Round 8: Ch 3 to count as first dc, work 3 more dc in the same st as joining; (skip next 2 dc, sc in the next dc, skip next 2 dc, 7 dc shell in the next sc) 11 times; skip next 2 dc, sc in the next dc, skip next 2 dc, 3 dc in the same st as the beginning 3 dc; join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3. (12 shells) Fasten off.
Joining front and back: Round 1: With wrong sides facing, and matching shells of both potholder pieces, sc through both pieces with green and size G hook 42 times; ch 12 (for hanging loop), sc in the same st and in the next 41 sts; join with a sl st to the first sc. (85 sc)
Round 2: (Ch 1, sl st in the next sc) 42 times; sl st in each of the next 12 chs; (ch 1, sl st in the next sc) 41 times. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Finishing: With red and size G hook ch 130. Fasten off, leaving a 6 tail. Thread yarn needle with tail of red piece; weave red piece through both thicknesses of the beading round (round 5); cut yarn; tie ends in a bow. Sew through the knot of the bow to secure.
Using size H hook, work as for potholder, eliminating the hanging loop when joining the two pieces together.
Dishcloth (make 1)
Using size I hook work same as potholder through round 6.
Round 7: Ch 1, sc in the same st as joining; (ch 1, skip next dc, 5 dc shell in the next dc, ch 1, skip next dc, sc in the next dc) 11 times; ch 1, skip next dc, 5 dc shell in the next dc, ch 1, skip next dc, sl st in the first sc (12 shells)
Round 8: Ch 3 to count as first dc, work 3 more dc in the same st as joining; (ch 1, skip next 2 dc, sc in the next dc, ch 1, skip next 2 dc, 7 dc shell in the next sc) 11 times; ch 1, skip next 2 dc, sc in the next dc, ch 1, skip next 2 dc, 3 dc in the same st as the beginning 3 dc; join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3. (12 shells)
Round 9: Ch 1, sc in the same st as joining; sc in each dc and in each ch 1 space around (do not sc in the scs between shells); join with a sl st to the first sc. (108 sc)
Round 10: (Ch 1, sl st in the next sc) 107 times; ch 1, join with a sl st to the first sl st. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Finishing: With red, ch 130; fasten off leaving a 6 tail. Thread yarn needle with tail of red piece; weave red piece through beading round (round 5); cut yarn; tie ends in a bow. Sew through the knot of the bow to secure. Weave in ends.
