Little Granite  & Boulder Railroad
The roots of the Little Granite & Boulder Railroad  can be traced back over 40 years. That first "Toy" train from Santa, sparked a life long hobby.  Countless layouts were built out of small plastic track pieces so that little "wooden" engines could pull their cars to imaginary destinations.  As the engineer  gained  "experience", he was able to setup the tracks and operate dad’s "Lionel" trains. But because of the large size of these "Electric" trains, this only took place a few times a year.

Sometime around the late 60’s, Santa brought the railroad department a new size train. "N" scale!  Now there was actually room to have a semi permanent layout operational year round. The layout eventually grew to a 5ft by 9ft table with some minor scenery and a lot of track & cars. Two other layouts were built, including a smaller one with a control panel and complete scenery.

In the late 70’s, the engineering department decided to move up a notch to "HO" size trains. Construction was started on a large 12ft by 22ft. layout. Track was laid and rolling stock was acquired. Hundreds of feet of wire was installed, and the "Hollywood Creek Railroad" was in operation. Construction continued until the mid 80’s, when a terrible disease hit railroad management.
   The "RC Bug"!

The engineer hung up his railroad cap and replaced it with a racing suit & helmet.  Radio control, "Nitro" powered  racing boats move a lot faster than a train!  Boats were built and races were won and lost. Most evenings were spent rebuilding and repairing engines and boats that were damaged in the weekend race.  It was a grueling schedule. Not to mention "Expensive"!

Around 1992, the racing department was feeling a little "burned out", so the fuel tanks were drained, and the boats were put into dry-dock.  Management started to look at a rather new size model train. "G" Scale!!!

The first train to arrive on railroad property was an "LGB" 0-4-0 loco and 2 cars.  14 pieces of  LGB track became the first of many large scale layouts.  That same year, a new Bachmann 4-6-0 arrived with 3 shinny new passenger cars. More track was acquired along with a few more cars. Within a few years, the roster had 4 or 5 loco’s, a dozen cars, and over 100ft. Of track. The decision was made to move out doors.

The first "outdoor" layout was a small loop of track laid on stones in an existing flower bed.  In spring 1994, negotiations were made for a "permanent" right of way and the first track of the Little Granite & Boulder Railroad was installed. The layout has changed  a few times during the years. The railroad reached it’s present size, (15ft. By 75ft), when the mainline loop of track was completed. The mainline has an 8ft. Minimum radius curve. A second branch line was built using 5ft radius curves. The branch line is a double figure eight that crosses over the mainline in two places.  The branch line has a automatic passing siding, and working signal system for 3 train operation. The mainline has also been signaled for 2 train operation. "Aristocraft" wireless, track side, train control is used to operate the trains.  A passing siding will be built in the future.  A "FULL SIZE", operational  railroad crossing signal from the AT&SF was installed to promote the railroad theme. (lights only work,  gate does not)

Many future expansions are planed as time and funds allow.  Longer main & branch lines. A third branch line. A new point to point interurban service. And finally a train storage shed that looks like a caboose.
