Wetter - Melle, Deutschland, ancestral home of the Hannebaum Family in America

Wetter (Melle), Lower Saxony, is the Ancestral Home of This Hannebaum Family

Wetter (Melle), Niedersachsen, ist der Stammsitz der Familie Hannebaum

Im Jahre 1843 wanderte Joist Friedrich Klausing Hannebaum, ein 55 Jahre alter Bauer, mit seiner Familie vom Königreich Hanover, Preußen, über den Einwanderungshafen Baltimore, Maryland, in die USA aus. Sie erreichten Baltimore an Bord des Segelschiffes Marianne am 25. September 1843. Mit J. Friedrich Klausing Hannebaum kamen seine Ehefrau Catharina Bredenwischer Hannebaum, 44 Jahre alt, und fünf Kinder: Elisabeth Hannebaum, 19 Jahre alt; Heinrich Hannebaum, 15 Jahre alt; Franz Hannebaum, 10 Jahre alt; Caterina Hannebaum, (?) Jahre alt und Wilhelm Hannebaum, (?) Jahre alt. Bitte richten Sie E-Mails.

The Ship Marianne (Hannebaum, 1843)

THE SHIP MARIANNE

Bremen to Baltimore, 1843

In 1843, Joist Friedrich Klausing Hannebaum, a 55-year-old farmer, emigrated with his family from the Kingdom of Hanover, Prussia, to the entry port of Baltimore, Maryland. They arrived on board the ship Marianne on September 25, 1843. With J. Friedrich Hannebaum was his wife, Catharina Bredenwischer Hannebaum, age 44. Accompanying them were their five surviving children: Elisabeth Hannebaum, age 19; Heinrich Hannebaum, age 15; Franz Hannebaum, age 10; Caterina Hannebaum, age in question; and Wilhelm Hannebaum, age in question. Their Baltimore arrival record states simply that their last permanent residence was Wetter. A search of Germany comes up with three cities named Wetter. Wetter (now part of Melle), Lower Saxony, Germany, has been confirmed as the ancestral home of this Hannebaum family. If you have additional information about this family, please send e-mail.

Note: What is the reason for the surname change from KLAUSING to HANNEBAUM?

Notiz: Was ist der Grund für eine Änderung des Nachnamens von KLAUSING in HANNEBAUM?

"I can only guess and tell you of an instance I experienced in doing my own German research. In this example the daughter inherited her father's farm because there were no brothers. In order to make it legal, her husband had to change his last name to her maiden name. Perhaps your example involved a similar reason." -- Mrs. B. I. Ellsworth, Mason City, Iowa

"Ich kann nur raten und Ihnen von einer Begebenheit erzählen, von der ich während meiner eigenen deutschen Nachforschungen erfahren habe. In diesem Beispiel erbte die Tochter den Hof ihres Vaters, da sie keine Brüder hatte. Um es legal zu machen, musste ihr Ehemann seinen Nachnamen ändern und ihren Mädchennamen annehmen. Vielleicht gibt es in Ihrem Beispiel einen ähnlichen Grund." -- Mrs. B. I. Ellsworth, Mason City, Iowa

"If a wife had no brothers to continue her family line, in order to inherit her father's land, her husband could add his wife's surname to his own. Sometimes husbands dropped their own surname, particularly if the wife's family name had more prestige. My own great-great-grandfather was born Ernst Heinrich ALBERT vulgo KLÜNDERS. Other people in the area may have adopted a local farm name as their own if that name had more prestige. If they did not want to drop their own name, they could add it as 'vulgo' or 'gennant' meaning, 'also known as.' " -- Robert Albert, Jr., Bakersfield, California

-- Robert Albert, Jr., Bakersfield, California USA

FAMILY 2:

J. Frederick HANNEBAUM & Catherine Elizabeth BREDENWISCHER, and at least 6 children: Elizabeth, Henry, Frank, Catherine, William and Friedrich HANNEBAUM

Joist Friedrich KLAUSING [HANNEBAUM]

Widowed farmer in Kingdom of Hanover, Prussia. Had two sons from first marriage. He had adopted his first wife's surname, HANNEBAUM, probably in 1815. He married his second wife in Sehlingdorf, then they moved to Wetter (Melle), living at a farm on a road called Buermannsheide. In 1843, Friedrich and his second wife, Caterina, emigrated from Prussia to America, landing at Baltimore on September 25, 1843. They traveled to Cincinnati, Ohio, and from there settled in Peppertown, Franklin County, Indiana. For vital dates and places, see above.

Caterina is listed on passenger list of ship Marianne, 1843: Age 1. However, judging from 1880 and 1900 U.S. Census records, she would have been born about 1834, and therefore would have been about nine (9) years old at the time of the Atlantic crossing. Her birth record has not yet been found in Lutheran Church records of Wetter-Buer (Melle).

She is listed on the 1870 Hamilton County, Ohio, Census with five sons. Joseph and Catherine Brinkman are listed on 1880 Brightwood (Indianapolis), Indiana Census with four sons. She is listed as a widow on 1910 Indianapolis, Indiana Census (at about age 76) with a total of eleven children, with only four still living in 1910. E.

Wilhelm ["William"] HANNEBAUM, [Sr.]

Wilhelm is not shown on the passenger list of the ship Marianne, yet he was most likely on board the ship. He would have been 6 1/2 at the time of the Atlantic crossing in late summer of 1843.

He grew up in Peppertown, Indiana; still at home in 1850. Got a job working on the Miami and Erie Canal linking Toledo and Cincinnati which had been completed in 1845. He married and settled in Springfield, Clark County, Ohio.
