Dependant Messages
A new trend has come out in the R&B world. A trend that is sending a bad message to my young womenz out there. The divas and girl groups I once respected and admired for their independecy and as strong woman role models, are now getting caught up in this reversing male dependecy trend.
They seem to be taking us backwards down the long hard road our early century fighting women so painfully treaded.
Almost all the R&B singles coming out are saying," Can you pay my bills?" and "I don't want no scrubs". The lyrics are saying that they need to find a man who has money to take care of their needs, and if that man they are with doesn't have money, they must leave to find a man that does. That a man is not a man in fact unless he has money.
They are not just saying we don't want to support you, they are sayin that we can't support ourselves and that a man's duty to support his woman. This is sending a terrible message to our women out there who for a good time now are starting to finally be taught to dream and accomplish things on their own. To think as equals to man. To support themselves and feel proud of it.
Now all of the sudden we have artists like Missy Elliot singing lines like," Where's my money? Where's my dough? Give me money..buy me clothes."
I'm sorry but this shames me as a young woman living in the 90's. Are we going backwards ladies?
We need artists out there sending positive messages again. None of this money hungry self absorbed dependant messages anymore.
Now I'm not saying that we should go and support our men. Not at all. Eryka Badu in her song "Tyrone" was singing about leaving a bum who expected her to support him, she wasn't leaving him because he didn't support her.
In the very wise words of one of the strongest posistive female role models out there, Ms. Lauryn Hill," Music is supposed to inpsire. So how come we ain't getting no higher?"
