The Cavern ©
It was in the deepest cavern
Where the light was loathe to go,
It was hid in desolation
Where the slimy mosses grow,
It was there that couched in silence,
And cushioned by the stone,
There formed the mighty mind
And grew the massive bone
Of the beast we dread to think of,
When we shiver in the dark
Or haste home in the gloaming
Through the once-familiar park,
When we feel his clinging fingers
As they're stretching for our back,
And our scream is forming mighty
As we brace for his attack.
When the air is hot and sticky
And the atmosphere is grim,
Then no one needs to tell you:
You simply know: It's him!
The egg had been there silent
For a million-million years,
Brooded by the our passions
And nourished by our fears,
Till one night just at midnight
While the thunder shook the world
The mammoth egg fragmented
And the fiendish form unfurled.
It was there that laced in limestone
(Where the heart of rock is torn)
And just at the stroke of midnight
When the new eon was born
That this creature born of malice
And fostered by our mind
Was born of man's corruption
To paralyze Mankind.
