AMANDA SPAULDING
Amanda was the result when teenaged Alan Spaulding
seduced Jennifer Richards (a.k.a. Jane Marie Stafford). Jennifer's
parents had given Amanda to Brandon Spaulding, who in turn gave
her to his former mistress, Lucille Wexler, to raise as her own.
Lucille brought Amanda up to believe that men couldn't be trusted
and that sex was filthy, making it almost impossible for Amanda
to have a good marriage. Her frigidity was part of the reason
her first marriage (to Gordon Middleton) ended. She was helped
through those troubled times by Ben McFarren. Of course, this
didn't sit well with his wife, Eve, Rita Stapleton's
sister. After they divorced, Ben turned to Amanda, though his
heart was still with Eve. They eventually married. Soon Lucille
schemed with Ross Marler to
break up her daughter's marriage, with the hope that Amanda would
turn to Ross, who's loyalty she could count on. Their marriage
began to fall apart, but Amanda didn't let on that she was pregnant.
Things got worse when the secret of Amanda's parentage came out.
Lucille was eventually killed by Jennifer in self defense. Upon
learning the truth, Amanda collapsed and miscarried. Ben vowed
to stand by her, but Amanda didn't want to have his pity.
She began seeing Ross, but was still troubled.
Of course, troubled women became a pattern for Ross. Thanks to
future wife/nutcase Carrie, Ross came clean with Amanda and she
promptly retreated into a fantasy world, wearing little-girl dresses
and playing the piano all day. Eventually, she snapped out of
it and Alan gave her a prestigious job at Spaulding. After Alan
was put in prison for obstructing justice in the Roger Thorpe
case, Amanda became president of Spaulding. She did the job admirably
and was helped by Mark Evans. Vanessa
tried to come between them, but they broke up due to her previous
sexual problems. He left town only to return married to her mother,
Jennifer, shocking Amanda. To make matters worse, Jennifer became
pregnant. When she learned of their affair, Jennifer left town.
Things got even worse for Amanda when Alan returned and removed
her as president of Spaulding. Afterwards, Amanda, Ross and Josh
formed their own company: Los Tres Amigos (The Three Friends).
Amanda got drawn into the crazy web of Mona Enright, a woman who
was staying on the third floor of Vanessa's brother, Quint's mansion.
Mona wanted revenge against Mark, wanting him to kill Amanda,
but Mark took a bullet for her and died after telling Amanda he
never lied about loving her. Amanda was comforted briefly again
by Ross, but soon left town to join her mother who had sent a
note requesting a reconciliation. Before leaving, Amanda sold
her oil stock to the Lewis family. What she did during her time
away from Springfield anybody's guess and part of the mystery
of her return.
