The Clarion Ledger - Southern Style - Newspaper - Thursday November 25, 1993

With Thanksgiving in mind, readers of The Clarion-Ledger were asked to submit there personal miracles, things they will give special thanks for today. The response was overwhelming. Here are a few of them.

MY MIRACLE

Someone's watching

When her Toyota pickup was struck from behind on Sept. 27, 1992, Linda Johnston was thrown through the windshield, hit a green hospital sign and skidded across Mississippi 18. Both legs were broken, her right hip shattered, three vertebrae compressed. She spent 58 days in the hospital.

She also died at the scene and lived to tell about it.

"It was during the time that I was airborne that I died," says Johnston, 40, of Clinton. "In doing so, my angel came to me. It allowed me to rise up and view my body below. I saw the position my body was in, blood all around it. I could hear the sound of music, a soft choir like music. I couldn't see the angels mouth move, but I heard it say, "It's not your time yet, but do you want to come with me?" I said, ‘No, I wanted to stay with my husband and children.' That's when I was given the opportunity to go back into my body.

"I remember that the angel came through a tunnel, a passageway. It sort of floated down to me. On the left side of the passageway, it was one of the darkest dark you can ever imagine. On the right side, it was extremely bright . . . so bright you would think it would hurt your eyes, but it didn't. It's hard to explain, but it was so bright that it didn't make you turn away, it made you say, ‘My gosh, I've never seen anything so bright.'

"The angel was bathed in white, robe like clothing, I saw bits of yellow and blue, almost like a fluorescent illumination from the body. It was so bright you couldn't see eyelashes of the mouth of the angel, but you could make out hands and arms. Its voice was very calm, very distinct, very soothing, very assuring."

Johnston says the angel has visited her before, when she was 8 and nearly walked out in front of a moving car and again at age 12 when she underwent an emergency appendectomy. "There was nothing ever scary about it," she says.

The angel visited her again four days after the accident. "I was in intensive care, things were still touch and go, but the angel told me not to worry, that everything would be all right," she says.

Johnston, an artist who has painted what she remembers from her visions, realizes her story sounds far-fetched. She knows there will be some people who won't believe her.

"It's sorta like seeing a UFO," she says. "Until it happens to you, you're skeptical. The ones that don't believe, I simply don't go into the story with them. It someone is curious, then I will sit down and take a minute to explain."

Johnston doesn't consider herself overly religious. "As far as going to church every Sunday, I don't," she says. "I do believe there is a God that protects us all, and it doesn't really matter if you're Baptist of Catholic or whatever."

She does consider herself the recipient of a miracle.

"They told me I would probably never walk again," she says. "I spent five months in a wheelchair, went from there to a walker. Now, I'm down to walking with one cane.

"It's changed me. I think I'm more understanding with people now. I've learned to take one day at a time a little better. I'm not quite as rushed. If I feel I have too much to do, I just mellow out and say it may take a while, but I'll get it done."
