Tamara Stuart works hard to send a message to teenage girls - get involved in non-traditional female roles in science engineering and exploration. Practicing what she preaches, she has been competing in science fairs since the sixth grade with projects ranging from thermodynamics to communicating in outer space. Her effortshave earned her 25 awards from organizations including the American Society of Naval Engineers and Astrolab.
Last year she was selected to take part in the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Teach-One, Teach-Many Student Outreach Program. She developed her own PowerPoint presentation on the Ulysses and Voyager space exploration projects and gives it to preteens and teenagers at schools, youth centers and community organizations. Tammy's presentation incorporates secondary messages to students on the importance of staying in school and remaining drug and alcohol free while encouraging them to take advanced math and science classes.
She combines her love of flying with her leadership skills through her membership in the U.S. Air Force Auxiliary Civil Air Patrol (CAP). As a cadet Lt. Col, she works with other cadets weekly helping them set goals, develops their leadership skills and takes responsibility for their actions. She participates in CAP search missions and hopes to achieve cadet colonel and become a Space Cadet.
For the past four years Tammy has been a project developer and leader for Make a Difference Day. She also helped organize the Toys for Tots Christmas drive and spearheads a clean-up program for the Palm Springs Youth Center. A proficient ham radio operator, she is a registered disaster relief worker for Riverside County'sAmateur Radio Civil Emergencies Services and organized a collection of needed children's items, clothes and toys for a local children's shelter. Her many community service efforts were recognized when the City of Palm Springs proclaimed June 17,1998 as Tammy Stuart Day.
