Proud to say he was my dad ............Ray Dowson

Former Police Officer, born in Gainford, County Durham he was a holder of the Binney Memorial Medal Scroll 1984 for outstanding bravery in the City of London - 30 years service to the Wiltshire Police including CID and Serious Crimes Squad.

He tackled two armed raiders one with a shot gun in a jewellery store in Hatton Garden, his actions and later descriptions and testimony helped convict a gang of armed raiders.

He also held several Chief Constable's commendations from the Wiltshire force, a tough and hard, but fair man of the 'old school' he made 1,000 arrests in 5 years together with his partner.

Sadly he passed away on 14 September 1985. Gone but never forgotten, always an inspiration.......

Wanted - My latest research project is going to be a detailed study of the 43rd (Wessex) Infantry Division during the Normandy Campaign. This work will focus mainly on the 5th Battalion of the Wiltshire Regiment, part of the 129th Infantry Brigade.

Information, stories, photographs, diaries and oral history recordings are most welcome (copies of course).

If you have anything that could help or would like to contribute please email me.

Having published 3 books on Great War subjects this will be my second WWII study.

I would also welcome material from German sources of units that had faced the 43rd during the battles around Caen.................
