SOME HISTORY OF THE LONE OAK COMMUNITY CENTER The Lone Oak Elementary School was closed by the Sequatchie County Board of Education in May 1988. The building and grounds were auctioned off to the highest bidders in August 1989. The building and lot it is on went to one individual while the playground to another and the ball field to another. Through the efforts of the community in 1990 enough money was raised through personal donations, business donations and local grants to buy the building and lot. Many volunteer hours were put in trying to get the building back in shape for it to become a Community Center. Many dontions were received such as carpet, tile for the floor, paint for the inside of the building, and electrical work. The fund raising continued through monthly breakfast, Highway 127 Sale food sales, donations, a Spring and Fall Auction till enough was raised to buy the ball field lot. This same type fund raising was done until enough money was raised to buy the play ground lot. The building had a flat roof and leaks started in different parts of the building. Enough money was raised to put on a raised roof about $25,000.00. In the summer of 2002 another dream was realized as enough money was raised during 2001 and the Hwy. 127 sale of 2002 to put new windows all the way around the building about $25,000.00. A new heat/AC system has been put in the kitchen and dinning area. Getting enough money to lower the ceilings in the dining area and kitchen and buying some new kitchen equipment needed to serve the breakfast and Hwy 127 meals. It takes many many volunteers and many many volunteer hours to keep the center operating smoothly.
