fairly rapidly as they are discovered and shut down:

For those of us surfing the Net from China......Setting a public proxy
(cache) server in your browser preferences allows you to visit sites that
are not available on China Net. The two proxies I posted a few weeks ago
stopped working as soon as I posted them! Sorry about that! I don't know
what happened. But here are two proxies that are working for _my_ ISP in
Beijing. (However, these might not work on the Beijing 163.net ISP. Sorry!
:-/ *please* let me know if find they work, or not.)

          kusu.city.kurume.fukuoka.jp : 8080

                proxy.mcmail.com : 8080

(before the colon is the proxy, after the colon is the port).

Some sites that we presently need a proxy to visit from within China Net are:

* China Gray List -- China English teaching job warnings

* CNN  -- world news.
* VOA note that to get to the VOA
gopher pages you need to set up the proxy and port # in
the gopher slot in your preferences, not just the http
  slot.
* Frisk Software -- F-Prot free anti-virus program and
updates . Note you must set
proxy and port no. in the _ftp_ slot in preferences
for this one because it is ftp.

You might not want to always use the proxy. In Netscape you can turn the
proxy on and off with the (o) radial buttons in the proxy settings window
without losing the settings. Perhaps you should keep the proxy turned off
for normal surfing and only turn it on when you need it to get to a blocked
site such as the China Teaching Gray List on Geocities or the VOA broadcast
transcripts gopher.

How to *manually* set a proxy in Netscape and IE:

Netscape 4
----------
  Edit > Preferences > [-]Advanced > Proxies.

If you don't see the Proxies sub-menu under [-]Advanced,
then click on the box ([+]Advanced) so that it turns to
[-] and the Proxies sub-menu appears, then click on "Proxies."

Netscape 3
----------
Options > Network Preferences... > Proxies

Internet Explorer 5
---------------------------
Tools > Internet Options > Connection > Settings button > click in Proxy
server [ ] box and enter proxy and port numbers.

Internet Explorer version ?
---------------------------
View > Options > Connection > Proxy servers > Settings
    or
The Internet > properties > Advanced.
    or
  Internet Connections > Options.
    or
