Temples are at the heart of traditional Chinese society. They are often found in the mountains, which have a holy association. Many of them were damaged during the 10-year cultural revolution of 1966-76 and were quasi-museums until recent years when they have become functional again. To the left is the fa hua temple on the Shandong peninsula.

| Religion is more openly practiced in China
now. In 1991 there were very few people visiting the temple at Qian fo shan
(Thousand Buddha Hill) in Jinan to actually pray. When I visited again in 1999 there were
many more temples and people were selling joss sticks and other buddhist paraphenalia.
There was also a giant statue of Guan yin, one of the most important Buddhist
deities.

This is a simple countryside temple. Here we see portraits of two important Chinese deities, the Fire God and the Dragon King. |
