Dogs, Cats and Wolves: A Family Pack

Wolf the Stout-hearted

I am Wolf the Stouthearted, the elder statesman of the Pack. I had a real rough start in life as I was born during a tornado in 1985. I was 8 weeks old I went to live with my Mom and Dad and got a new cousin, Beaucephus the Golden Retreiver and my little mommy-cat, Poo. The three of us had a lot of fun while I was growing up, playing and harrassing Mom and Dad.

When I was about 2 years old Beau got real sick with cancer and didn't want to play much any more. It wasn't too long till he told me he had to go to a new home at the Rainbow Bridge and that I would see him some day, but not to worry 'cause he wouldn't be in pain any more and would be able to play again.

Poo and I kind of just moped around the house until one day we saw a young Wolf/Husky girl out in the fields behind our house hunting birds. She told us she had a house to live in but the twoleggeds there never fed her enough and she had a litter of babies to feed. She was quite proud that all seven of them were almost old enough to go to new homes where they could get enough to eat. She was so skinny and had lots of ticks living on her, something Mom and Dad would NEVER let happen to us, that we told her to kinda hang around so Mom and Dad would see her.

Just then we had a real bad rain and the field flooded real bad but as soon as the water went down she was back hunting birds to eat. She told us her babies were all gone to new homes and her twoleggeds weren't paying any attention to her. Well, Poo and I agreed that she should come live with us. I started raising a fuss so Mom and Dad saw this poor skinny, wet, dog trying to catch her own dinner. They called her and fed her. I didn't even mind sharing my food.

That is how Tess of the Rain came to be a member of my pack.

Tess of the Rain

Hi,I am the mom-dog, Tess. I am a wolf/husky that was rescued from a very bad place by Mom and Dad. I am going to never let anyone who is nice to me not know how much I appreciate them. I lick!!!!!!

Wolf told you how I came to join the pack, and boy have I found 'fat-city'. My hunting is now limited to chasing an occasional squirrel or lizzard, but I really don't want to catch them, 'cause then there will be no one to chase.

Two more times I had babies, and I met all the new Moms and Dads before I allowed my babies to go live with them. I still have one of Wolf and my babies come over to visit. Sequoia is the only one living near us. Mom and Dad had 2 more dogs living with us who were only here a few years, and then went along with Poo to the Bridge to wait for us.

About 4 years ago Mom and Dad moved out to the country and now we have lots of fenced in land to play in and lots of wild critters to chase. They also brought home a CAT! But Mom told Wolf and me that Dac had been left on the front step of the Vet's and really needed a forever home like I got. So I told Wolf to just get a grip and that Dac would live with us.

Well here we were, 2 dogs and a cat, a real happy pack when Dad said something about a puppy would be good for us old dogs.

Hrumph! I AM NOT OLD. I'm just mellow. But he brought a baby Malamute home. I guess I have to be a mommy-dog again and train PatsyCline. But, boy, is she NOISY! And she needed a lot of training on how to fit into the pack. She thought she was Queen-of-the-World.

PatsyCline the CW Singin' Malamute

I am CWSingn'PatsyCline. I was born 17 Feb. 1999. I am AKC registered. I have a microchip. I have to live with a couple of mutts who think they run the dog part of the pack. Hehe, I am special, Mom says that I am the world's most expensive purchased rescue dog in captivity.

The first day I was home, I wanted to let Wolf and Tess know that I was going to make the rules now. Tess said something about being the Mommy-Dog so I told her what I thought about that. Tess BIT my face!!!!!!! Well, we made a quick trip to the vet whom I had seen the day before and she shaved my face and gave me a shot, AGAIN!

I decided I would just lay low for a while and let Tess think she was in charge. After a while, Tess would even play with me. Our favorite games were digging holes and playing chase all over the yard (We have almost an acre to run in, and there is about 3 times as much out back, but Mom and Dad won't let us out there until there is a dog-fence).

One day Tess and I were running and I forgot I had dig a really deep hole and fell in it. I hurt my shoulder and was standing by the door screaming when Mom grabbed me and rushed me to the vet. Luckily I had just sprained it, but I had a lot of x-rays taken and got some more shots.

Why is it whenever ANYTHING happens to me the twoleggeds think I need a shot?

I continued to run and play and grow up but by the time I was about a year old, running became harder to do and my hips hurt a lot. Mom took me to the Vet again, and I got a shot, but fell asleep before I knew what was being done. When I woke up, my tummy hurt and Mom said I had been spayed because I had very bad Hip Displasia. That nite I walked over to Mom 'cause my tummy was wet. She freaked and called the vet, she told him I was bleeding, a lot. Another trip to the vet, and he put a real cute red band around my tummy, and...you guessed it...gave me a shot, infact, several of them.

A few weeks later when I was 14 months, I took a real long car ride with Mom and she left me at another Vet's. The next day I woke up after one of those sleepy shots, and they had shaved my whole left rear quarter, and my hip really felt funny. Mom told me that I had had a Total Hip Replacement.

So that is where I am right now, I can't run, jump, play, chase, get in bed with Dad, or have ANY fun. I stay in my crate or confined to the family room, and get a lot of pills that make me very mellow, and wait to heal up.

I still can Woooo-Wooo and talk so I am still bugging Tess. HEHEHEHEHE! And I am a lot happier and hurt a lot less so I guess the shots have been worth it. Mom just calls me a SNERT, but says its ok because I will grow out of it.

It is now September, I have been healing and resting a lot since April, partly because of the heat but also because my hip was a little stiff. Mom and Dad started what they called Physical Therapy. Mom would lay down on the sofa and I would lie on my back next to her getting tummy rubs. Dad would stretch my leg out straight.

Well it worked, I am now out running in the yard with my fur family, and chasing squirrels and lizzards and I am again the official Mala-dozer digging malamute holes all over the yard. I am SOOOOOOOOOOOO happy Mom had my hip fixed so I can be a real Mal. (Now she is talking about getting me a harness -- What is that?)

Mom even insisted on typing this. She claims I can't type. HA! Do I have a surprise for her --I got my own screen name on AOL: PatsyClineMRMTX@AOL.com

I would like to get emails from all the other dogs out there, especially from those in the Malamute Resistance Movement.
