Gymnastics and Dance on Horseback

What is Vaulting?

Vaulting is a growing equestrian sport in the United States which can be best described as gymnastics/dance on a moving horse.  The horse is controlled by a loungeur and moves in a circle.  Beginners start at the walk and progress to the canter.  Vaulting helps build balance and confidence on the horse as well as general athletic ability.  Vaulting is a year round sport, an indoor or outdoor arena is used to work the horse.  A barrel, or practice horse, is used to learn routines before performing them on the horse.  Competitions are held using a barrel, horse, or both.  Being part of a vaulting group is a lot of fun.  With the use of music, vaulters perform individually as well as pairs, trios, or as a team.

Vaulting offers the skills of dance and gymnastics while adding the opportunity to be involved with horses. It's a wonderful way to develop coordination, balance, strength, and creativity while working in harmony with horses.

Knowledge of horses is desirable but not necessary.  Horseback riding lessons are also available at the Hunt Club's Riding School.

More information about the Vaulting program can be found at   Lake Oswego Hunt Club's Vaulting website.
