SQUIRREL SOUNDS
Albert's Squirrel - A deeper "CHUCK CHUCK CHUCK" similar to the fox squirrel. Flying Squirrel - High-pitched "CHWEEP CHWEEP CHWEEP" whistles similar in tone to a bird call. Northern flying squirrels slightly lower in tone than southern flying squirrels. Fox Squirrel - "CHUCK CHUCK CHUCK" that is deeper and slower than the gray squirrel. Gray Squirrel - Raspy "CRRK CRRK CRRK" or "QUACK QUACK QUACK" (similar to a duck). Eastern and western gray squirrels sound similar. Red Squirrel - High-pitched "TCHK TCHK TCHK" or chatter. Red squirrels were originally named "chickarees" because of their distinctive vocal calls. Douglas Squirrel - High-pitched "TCHK TCHK TCHK" similar to red squirrels, but often in two-note pairs. Note: Recordings of squirrel voices can be found on the CD-ROM, Multimedia Audubon's Mammals (Creative Multimedia Corporation, Portland, OR, 503-241-4351). This 2-disc set also includes reproductions of all of the birds and mammals - including squirrels - illustrated by John James Audubon from his original books. |
