RATIONING, A SMALL SACRIFICE
by Captain Eddie Rickenbacker (1940s)
"Don't hoard--abide by the decisions of those who decide what must be rationed
for our own good. The cries and objections to being rationed on rubber and gasoline
seem so insignificant and ridiculous when we see what those boys haven't got. I couldn't
help thinking that the rubber in an old rubber tire was sufficient to make up two
or three of the type of rafts that we were in. If people only knew that the saving
of one old rubber tire could save seven men, they might take it more seriously.
They might not worry so much about whether they had their automobiles on week-ends
or whether they had to walk or ride the stree-car or subway.
