Gladius Pattern Shortswords: Thier Roman origins and Their 18th and 19th Century European and American Descendents
The gladius pattern short artillary sword has been a feature of European and American artillary weaponry since the mid 1700's when it was first adopted by the French who produced a number of variations over the years. The French styles were copied by many armies on both the continent and America resulting in a plethora of military short swords of similar pattern.
Sword A - US Pattern 1832 Artillary Sword Sword B - Confederate "Dog River" Sword Sword C - Unidentified Late 1800's Sword Sword D - British Drummer Sword Pattern 1856 Sword E, F - FRENCH INFANTRY GLADIUS Pattern 1831, Showing Makers Marks (Note: Please be aware that Sword E,F was previously incorrectly reported by the webhost as a French Artillary pattern. Please excuse the error with our apologies. Click on the link to review more information on this pattern sword) To add to the potential for confusion, the gladius pattern swords were also used widely by fraternal organizations in the US. Due to the large number of variations of this basic style, we would like to compile a reference of gladius hilt swords so that collectors may more easily identify their specific swords.
