About Malaya Designs: The First and Original
A Baybayin practitioner since 1994, Malaya Designs was established in 1997 in the San Francisco Bay Area, to celebrate the richness of our heritage. The first and original company anywhere to offer; custom, handmade wearable art made of wood or bamboo. Through our art we aspire to promote, propagate, and educate in the discovery of a rich culture that is Filipino.

Baybayin: The Philippine Ancient Script
Pre-Spanish history of the Philippines recounts an ancient writing system used by early Filipinos. This writing system flourished prior to the arrival of Spanish explorers and dates as far back as 900AD. The native population wrote poetry, songs and rituals on mediums such as; bamboo, leaves, and tree bark. Knives, cuttlefish ink and a stylus were used as writing implements. Through the use of the scripts, our forefathers exhibited high literacy much to the surprise of the early Spanish explorers. For more information I urge you to please visit the following sites:

Please!take the time to research the above links. They can answer many of your question.

Malaya Designs has created wearable art utilizing the Philippine ancient script known as Baybayin. A tangible example of our Filipino heritage, each pendant is meticulously handcrafted from Philippine Narra, Mahogany, Giant Bamboo and Maple. A transliteration of a word or a name is burned onto the pendant culminating in a truly unique and personalized keepsake. A memento to share with family and friends.

*Pendants are not actual size and products may vary slightly due to availability of materials.

Other Services
1. Transliterating of a word or name. (free service but will accept PayPal donations)
If you want to see what a transliteration of a word or name will look like, I can provide you with a text file using a Baybayin computer font by Paul Morrow. I will also be happy to verify a transliteration for you if you've done it on your own.

2. Custom Tattoo Flash starting @ $25
Aside from my pendants, I have also designed Baybayin tattoos for individuals since the inception of Malaya Designs. For a nominal fee. I can create a standard Baybayin tattoo flash (artwork) that you can take into a shop. I can provide samples of previous tattoo flash I've created for reference. All Baybayin artwork will be in my writing style.

Tattoo Flash Ground rules:  THINK BEFORE YOU INK!
1. My starting fee is $25 to create an original Baybayin artwork for you. The fee is for one word or phrase, multiple words or phrases will be subject to higher fees at my discretion. The bigger the piece or the more elaborate, the higher the price.
2. I do not and cannot replicate a computer Baybayin font by hand because it's impossible.
3. I do not use a Baybayin font for my artwork.
4. I only offer Baybayin script artwork because it's easy and inexpensive.
5. I do not offer Filipino "tribal inspired" patterns, because it would cost you alot. If you really want one from me and I have the time, we can make arrangements.
6. I do not do butterflies, flowers, disney characters, suns, stars etc...
7. I do not tattoo but can refer you to a great artist: Aleks Figueroa@filipinotattoos.com
He can do #4 and #5, I dare you to ask him to do #6.
8. I will do my best to accomodate approximate sizing, orientation; whether vertical or horizontal. Just don't make me jump through hoops. Let's keep it simple shall we?
9. I will no longer provide a graphic file of the actual artwork for preview, no more Mr. Nice. I am honestly tired of people stealing my artwork. If you want to see the closest representation of it, I can provide you with a text file using a computer font. You're welcome to steal that instead.
10. I prefer not to use the "modified version" of the Baybayin. I transliterate in the traditional form despite the fact that it is very limited and difficult. If you want a transliteration in the "modified version" I urge you to consider a Filipino word or phrase as an alternative. If you still want a "modified" version then I urge you to please educate yourself  in the difference and provide that information when approached. I will do my best to accomodate all requests within reason.
