Biographical Info:

Marilyn Mason was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, USA on August 7th, 1943. Trained as a secretary, she has specialized in the field of professional documentation preparation and publication since 1967 in cross-cultural settings in the US and in developing nations. She served as an Assistant to Rév. Alain Rocourt at the Methodist Publishing House in Haiti, 1976-77, and continued to collaborate with him in the publication of curriculum materials in Haitian Creole into the early 1990s, developing specialized editing skills in written Haitian Creole in the process. From 1986-1999, Marilyn served as an Administrative Secretary - Technical in the Department of Chemistry at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she honed her administrative and computer skills.

Creator of CreoleConvert and CreoleScan, she has directed Marilyn Mason Enterprises since 1989 and from 1996-2002 served as Founder, President & Chief Operating Officer of Mason Integrated Technologies Ltd (MIT2), a company created to research the potential for commercial development of more robust natural language processing and localization software for Creole languages.

Founder & Managing Consultant of The Creole Clearinghouse, Ms. Mason has extensive cross-cultural experience, having worked in urban USA, Belgium, Congo (formerly Zaire), and Haiti, and having traveled to Uganda, Kenya, Seychelles, France, Netherlands, Greece, England, Wales, Scotland, Jamaica, Montserrat, Belize, Canada, and Peru.

Marilyn is a member of these professional groups: Society for Caribbean Linguistics (SCL), Society for Creole and Pidgin Languages (SPCL), Association for Machine Translation in the Americas (AMTA), Komite Entènasyonal pou Pwomosyon Kreyòl ak Alfabetizasyon (KEPKAA; formerly KIPKAA), Rezo Entènèt Kreyolis Ayisyen (REKA), Association pour la Promotion et la Diffusion des Etudes Créoles (APRODEC), and The Institute of Localisation Professionals (TILP; based out of Ireland), where Marilyn serves
on its Council (Board of Directors) and is chair of its Professional Membership Review Committee (PMRC), Linguistics strand.

In addition, Marilyn was a Founding Director of The Alain Rocourt Endowment of the Illinois Great Rivers Conference of the United Methodist Church, which sends the total earnings of its invested funds directly to The Methodist Church of Haiti, in support of its schools. Haitian Methodist leader Rev. Alain Rocourt died at the end of 2002 but his legacy lives on. Marilyn has 3 grown children and 7 grandchildren.

1996 - 2002: Founder, President and Chief Operating Officer of Mason Integrated Technologies (MIT2).

1989 - present: Founder and Director of Marilyn Mason Enterprises, which has facilitated Marilyn's participation in volunteer activities related to Haitian ministry, R&D of Haitian Creole technology tools, MIT2 and TCC.

1986 - 1999: Administrative Secretary - Technical, Department of Chemistry, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, MA 02139. Specialization: computer network design and administration; research grant administration; document preparation for the Internet (see retirement notice; see letter of recommendation from supervisor).

1978 - 1991: Consultant, assisting organizations with development and administrative needs, often in cross-cultural or international settings.

Examples:

1990 - 1991: Assisted Rev. Alain Rocourt, Director of the Haitian United Methodist Mission in Miami, FL in the preparation of graded Sunday School curriculum materials in Haitian Creole. He faxed to me in Boston his handwritten notes; I typeset them and added relevant graphics, producing photo-ready masters which then could be photocopied and distributed in Florida, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Haiti. "Turn-around time" was often a matter of hours.

1989 - 1991: Served on the National Haitian Network Committee of the United Methodist Church (UMC); produced the Minutes of Committee meetings; researched the Haitian presence in the United States; disseminated to denominational leaders documentation and research results in regular information packets; did advance work and administrative oversight for the Convocation on United Methodist Haitian Ministries, held in Miami, FL from November 10-12, 1990.

1984 - 1985: Expedited set-up of IMB PC/XT at l'Eglise Méthodiste d'Haïti's publishing house in Port-au-Prince, Haïti, troubleshooting hard disk, emergency power pack, and printer problems; renovated the Director's filing system.

1983 - 1984: Served Russian-Ukrainian church organization at its U.S. headquarters in Connecticut, working with its Board of Directors on researching a computer system, as well as phototypesetting equipment for its publishing house.

1981 - 1982: Served on interim business-management team for EGC, a Christian urban resource center in Boston, MA. Did payroll, tax and insurance work, served on Finance and Development Committees at Board level, did research project on 10-year pattern of donor giving, and introduced computerization to organization. In addition, created Haitian Outreach Department, researched Haitian Community in Greater Boston, established channels between suppliers in Montréal, Canada, and EGC's foreign language bookstore in Boston for the distribution of French literature to Haitians, helped to forge links between the Haitian Community and Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary's extension seminary (CUME) in Boston for additional training of Haitian church leaders, and helped to expand EGC's Power in the City program to include Haitian Créole and/or French seminars, in addition to their existing English and Spanish ones. This Department is now in the capable hands of Rév. Soliny Védrine, a Haitian pastor in Boston (see Inside EGC: September-October, 2004, particularly the section "EGC's Haitian Ministry" in bold face type on page 2).

1978 - 1980: Served as management consultant to Children's Haven, Inc. of E. Douglas, MA, during time of organizational transition and personnel difficulties. Researched their administrative systems and conducted a management seminar, which was tailor-made
for them.

1976 - 1977: Direct contract worker for l'Eglise Méthodiste d'Haïti / the Methodist Church of Haiti. Developed office systems and procedures for newly-formed training center and publishing house in Port-au-Prince. Served as assistant to the Haitian Director Rév. Alain Rocourt in a trilingual setting. Expedited overseas purchases of equipment and supplies, received training in the operation, maintenance and repair of printing equipment in the U.S., and helped to set it up in Haiti and to train the staff in its use. Did lay-out and design work, typesetting, editing, platemaking, offset printing, and collating of printed educational materials. Also assisted in the development of Sunday School Curriculum materials and concurrently served as Administrative Secretary.

1970 - 1976: Served Africa Inland Mission of Pearl River, NY: First, as secretary to the Director of Centre Médical Evangélique, Nyankunde, Zaïre, Central Africa, 1971 to 1973. Handled correspondence, typing of medical reports, orders for medical supplies, as well as funding proposals. Served as typing teacher (using French and Swahili), mail expeditor and banker for the Medical Center, its related Medical School (where husband taught Med/Lab Science), and surrounding community. Then, in public relations and liaison for AIM's interracial, inter-denominational urban outreach program, Newark, NJ, 1973 to 1976.

1967 - 1970: Served as co-director (with husband) of Merrimac Mission, Inc., an interracial, interdenominational resource center in Boston, MA. Was responsible for directing the Education program, writing educational and promotional material, teaching, and performing varied secretarial and administrative duties.

1961 - 1962: Served as clerk-typist, Employers' Liability Assurance Corp., New Bedford, MA.

EDUCATION:

Fairhaven High School, Fairhaven, MA, graduated 1961 with highest honors. Trained especially in clerical and secretarial work: bookkeeping, 2 years; accounting, 2 years; typing, 3 years; shorthand, 2 years; transcription, 1 year; business machines, 1 year; business law, 1 year; augmented by selected college-track core-curriculum courses (English & Chemistry).

Comprised of taped interviews conducted in Haiti by CBC's Montreal-based journalist David Gutnick during his visit of Jan-Feb 2004, the programs are Internet-available as Real Audio files with accompanying photographic slides. French (HAÏTI: Un Pays Ne Meurt Jamais) and Haitian Creole (AYITI: Yon Peyi Pa Janm Mouri) versions are also available. Gutnick and Mason previously collaborated

MASON, Marilyn. 1991 to present. Illustrated Haitian Creole Bible Books, preliminary data output of Marilyn Mason's Haitian Creole Orthography Conversion software; the Haitian Bible Society has embarked upon an official orthographical updating of the print version of Bib la an Ayisyin, but has been kind enough to grant Marilyn Mason written permission to "publish freely on the Internet" Bible books which have been subjected to her computer program and which honor the Haitian Government-mandated IPN standard.

MASON, Marilyn. 1999 to 2002. Created, Internet-published and maintained the trilingual (French, Creole, English) Mason Integrated Technologies (MIT2) Website (Jeff Allen contributed to the French version; Emmanuel W. Védrine contributed to the Haitian Creole version). Since 2003, an abridged version of this site has been kept online by Marilyn in order to preserve for posterity what was accomplished in the name of MIT2 toward the goal of applying new technologies to Creole languages.

MASON, Marilyn. 2003-2004. Served as consultant to David Gutnick of Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC)'s Radio One in the production of Haiti: A Country Never Dies, a series of radio programs highlighting Haiti during its Bicentennial Year. The programs are Internet-available as Real Audio files with accompanying photographic slides. French (HAÏTI: Un Pays Ne Meurt Jamais) and Haitian Creole (AYITI: Yon Peyi Pa Janm Mouri) versions are also available. Gutnick, a journalist for CBC English Radio
in Montreal, and Mason previously collaborated in the production of a CBC Radio Special on Haitian Creole (http://www.cbc.ca/insite/CEST_LA_VIE_MONTREAL/2003/3/14.html).

As Founder, President & Chief Operating Officer of Mason Integrated Technologies (MIT2) from 1996-2002, many doors were opened to Marilyn Mason to advocate on behalf of the technological support of Creole languages at the highest levels of governmental and non-governmental agencies, industry, language technology conferences and academia. Creole advocacy, team building, and networking are the lasting legacies of MIT2.

Building upon this past experience, The Creole Clearinghouse (TCC) will, in collaboration
with a network of Creole specialists with whom Marilyn has established a basis of mutual
trust, make use of tools Marilyn created before the birth of MIT2 to improve the consistency
and excellence of materials translated and produced in Creole.
