Junction City Mars 2030

Three Dimensional Systems

Students at Oaklea Junior High focused on systems for their three dimensional projects. Each Project Team was given a system to research, brainstorm and illustrate. Below are paragraphs written by each Project Team discussing the group's system.

Weights and Measurement
The name for height is "ili." The name for weight is "brocc." We decided on this because it was different and fit in with the broccoli theme. We will measure height by one broccoli stock.

Martian Money
Our project is to decide what our money on Mars is going to be like and to decide what the bank is going to be like. So far we made up money trees and each person has their own money tree in the bank. The tree can grow money from a computer operated system. If the person takes too much money they will go bankrupt and the tree wilts and they have to buy another tree. It costs 300 dollars to buy another tree.

Martian Language
Our project is Martian language. We have chosen Latin as the official language of Mars. We chose Latin because it has fewer letters than English, but is somewhat the same. Also Latin is an important scientific language. For those reasons we have chosen Latin as the official language of Mars.

Revolution on Mars

What do you do when some of the founding colonists want a democracy and others want a dictatorship? We decided to have a revolution. When one of our Project Teams developed a rather controlled environment for our colony, rebellion broke out. Dictatorship was thrown out the door and Democracy was put in its place. Many heated debates were then followed by ballot voting.

Oaklea students utilized their creative thinking on all completed projects. The subjects of art and science were continuously combined in group projects. Gene splicing and virtual reality themes continuously popped up in student writings and three dimensional work. Some students decided to grow their own soda pop trees while others used trees as their source for money. Virtual reality theme parks took over the planet as did a funny little green vegetable -- broccoli.

Broccoli became a major theme for our colony. Broccoli florets adorned our flag and insignias. Broccoli farming became a major industry with exporting amazing Martian broccoli to Earth. We even decided to use one stalk of broccoli as our standard of measurement. It was only natural to celebate our last day of the Mars Millennium Project with broccoli heads dipped in ranch dressing.

Oaklea students in Junction City would like to see an end to gun violence in the future. Students would like to see stricter rules for gun ownership and no more school shootings. Many would like to see less cars on the streets in order to prevent more pollution from entering our atmosphere. Other students would like to see everyone in a home, with no need for people to live on the streets. Some would like to see a true miracle -- like seeing the Cubs win the World Series!

More About Us

We are a group of sixteen 5th through 8th grade students from Oaklea Junior High in Junction City. We live in a rural part of Oregon, about two hours south of Portland. Our town has a population of about 5000. The big event in Junction City is an annual Scandinavian Festival with costumes, dancing, and lots of fantastic food.

Students volunteered for the Mars Millennium Project and spent two weeks working on the project after school. With no special incentives or threat of a bad grade, students worked extremely hard setting goals and accomplishing them.
