Irma Estel LaGuerre is of Azteca and Taino heritage and was born in New York City, where she graduated from the Manhattan School of Music with a Masters Degree in Music. After graduation, she pursued a musical career performing in opera and concert recitals, and as a soloist with various dance companies, orchestras and chamber orchestras. She performed with The Brooklyn Philharmonic where she excelled in ‘Motivos de Son’ conducted by the world-renowned conductor/composer Ms. Tania Leon. Ms. Laguerre recently played the role of Carlota in 'Night over Taos' directed by Ms Estelle Parsons for INTAR.
Irma's artistic range runs the gamut from musical comedy to dramatic productions. A gifted actress/singer, her performances have earned her critical acclaim both on and off Broadway. Ms. Laguerre was mesmerizing in roles in the musical ‘Juan Darien’, which she performed on Broadway and on the international tour. In the Broadway version, she undertook the role of The Singer and a song was written especially for her. On the international tour, she played the lead role of The Mother, which earned her a nomination for San Francisco’s Theatre Critic Circle Award. Also in Irma’s repertoire is the role of Lady Thiang in ‘The King and I’. She has performed the role twice: first with Yul Brynner on Broadway and later with Rudolf Nureyev on national tour. Both performances received critics accolades.
Ms. Laguerre was memorable in Carlos Morton's (Puerto Rican Traveling Company) 'El Jardin’ as Eva. As Sor Juana Inez de la Cruz (Mabou Mines/Intar), Ms Laguerre thrilled audiences in ‘Suenos’ with her interpretation of Herschel Garfeins's demanding compositions. She excelled as Teresina in Will Holt's 'Walk on the Wild Side', and as Susana in 'The Girl in the Picture'. She can be seen in reruns of ‘Law and Order’ in The Healer episode and on 'The Sopranos' as Native American woman#1. Ms. Laguerre was seen in the PBS movie ‘The War that made America’ playing Seneca woman #1, and in ‘Fort Stanwix’ interpreting the role of the Bear Clan Mother of the Oneida Nation. Next year, Ms Laguerre will appear in the independent feature film ‘Buzz Kill’ where she plays Mama, a Navajo woman.
Irma has also played non-Native/Latina roles including Julie in both 'Showboat and 'Carousel. She has also appeared in numerous commercials, print ads and soap operas (‘All my Children’ as Carmen), and was featured on the ABC childrens’ series 'City Kids'. Irma has also performed in Central and South America with Repertorio Espanol interpreting roles of Luisa in ‘The Fantastiks’ and Lucrezia in ‘La Celestina’, a Lorca play.
