3D Strongholds
|
|
|
|
It should be noted that I was not the first to create 3Ds. Relief images for cards were done for Magic by several people. The first person that I know of that did them for L5R was Sunshine from the Philippines. Unfortunately my skill with wood is insufficient to make the wooden frames, though I've grown fond of the deeper plastic boxes (perhaps it's some sort of narcissism?).

Beginning
First of all, you'll need to get the materials. As shown, you'll need:
* Multiple copies of the stronghold card
* An exacto blade (Exacto brand if possible)
* A cutting mat...I highly recommend "self-healing" if you can get a hold of one.
* A bunch of extra commons to slice up as fillers. Alternatively you can use balsa or other card stock.
* Spray adhesive. Get the tacky kind that doesn't warp paper.
* Regular paper/wood glue.
* Plastic box (50 count or 25 count depending on how deep you want the stronghold to be)
* Black permanent marker (black paint pen also works well...make sure it writes on plastic)

*IMPORTANT*
*SAFETY TIP*
If you wear glasses, great.
If not, get some safety goggles, as the tips occasionally break and a small metal shard will try to become one with your eyeball.

Slicing and Dicing
Cut out different parts of each stronghold. Remember that you only need to cut out what you don't want to see. I wholeheartedly advise cutting the most difficult layer first. While this may seem counterintuitive, if you make a mistake, just use that card for a different layer, and in the meantime you've had practice cutting!

Cut out the middle of the commons cards to use as filler.

Putting it all together
Darken the sides of the bottom half of the plastic box with the marker. It doesn't have to be perfect as once the cards are inside light doesn't pass through anyway.

Go outside and spray the backs of each of the cards with the spray glue. Line up the cards on top of one another, using the filler commons as spacing

For added effect, get an extra stronghold and cut out the title box, stats, and text box. Cut a small piece of balsa (or card) and use it to raise the title/stats/text on the front of the stronghold. I like to glue a length of chord around the top of the stronghold as a "frame". The chord can be bought at any fabric supply place for about a buck a yard.
Back the stronghold with a monback if you have one, or any favorite card.
