Memories of Maverick
September 26, 1994 - October 6, 2002
I have also created a page for Maverick at Rainbow's Bridge..to visit that site and read more about Mav's life, please click here.
Maverick was my first Rottweiler - in fact, he was my first dog...he captured my heart in a way that no other creature will ever be able to.  Of course I thought he was special, but he seemed to have a way of touching other peoples lives as well....he was a wonderful companion and an ambassador for the Rottweiler breed.  I was blessed with Maverick in my life for eight wonderful years and sorrowfully lost him to spinal cancer in October of 2002.  I miss him terribly and always will...these are just a few photos to represent the wonderful years I was able to share with him.
This was taken the day after I brought Mav home - he's about 6 1/2 weeks old in this photo.
Maverick's dog mommy and all his sisters...just days after they were born.
I have learned a lot since I first got Maverick - most importantly I have learned to research breeders before purchasing a dog.  I purchased Maverick from a breeder that did not register all of their dogs and did not do the necessary health clearances and I have learned to never do that again.  Although I could not have asked for a better temperment in a dog (his "breeders" did at least treat their dogs well and did a good job of training and socializing them as well as their puppies), poor Maverick suffered from hip dysplasia (a genetic problem that should be tested for before breeding) as well as a rather weak immune system.  I do not regret anything about my time with Mav - I know that everything happens for a reason and he truly was my "heart dog"...but in the future I will only support those reputable breeders that are breeding to improve the Rottweiler breed and beg others to do the same.
Mavy - ready for a day tubing on the Salt River!
This is a family photo of Maverick with his mommy (Shawna) and his little sister Destiny (the Chow Chow) taken around Christmas 2000.
I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to live overseas in Eritrea (East Africa) for six months in 2001 - I couldn't stand to be away from Mav for so long...so I took him with me!  He did great on the trip and seemed to enjoy his time playing on the beach and meeting all kinds of new people...including the Canadian UN troops (we're posing in front of one of their amoured personal carriers on the left).  He is relaxing in a hotel in Germany on the way home in the photo above.
Maverick loved to swim - or sometimes just sit on the step and play with his floating toys...for years I had to find friends that would allow us to borrow their pools, so finally in February 2002, I bought a house with a nice yard so Mav could have his very own pool!  He loved it and used it regardless of the weather outside!!
After I lost Maverick, I realized that my life was just not complete without a Rottweiler in it...so after some healing time, I started the long and difficult search for a puppy to try and fill his pawprints and live up to his legend.  In April 2003, I found him.  I brought Legend home and now feel as if I always have a part of Maverick with me - Legend is not the same, but there are enough "coincidences" that convince me Mav is here somewhere coaching the new boy.  To visit Legend's webpage, click here.
This was my baby boy, my "heart dog" and my very best friend...whom I miss terribly.
