A Final Peace
"I have seen war. I have seen war on land and sea. I have seen blood running from the wounded. I have seen men coughing out their gassed lungs. I have seen the dead in the mud. I have seen cities destroyed... I have seen children starving. I have seen the agony of mothers and wives. I hate war." FDR, August 14, 1936

The Unites States has maintained an imperialistic policy towards other nations for more than 100 years now. This imperialism began in 1898 with the expansionist efforts in the Spanish-American War.

The "Battle of San Juan Hill" lead by Teddy Roosevelt marks the beginning of this new attitude towards our neighbors.

Since then, the U.S. has become more sophisticated in its imperialistic actions around the globe. It is no longer necessary for us to take territories by force--now we overrun them by economic and cultural pressures.

In our arrogant imperialism, we believe that to "become American" is the highest ideal of any person or people, and in this arrogance we disseminate our cultural and economic beliefs around the globe like missionaries gone mad.
Terrorism has recently struck deep at the heart of the United States. Lives are lost, many are injured and homeless, and we are left with uncertainties about our safety and the future.

We are given to understand that al Qaeda, and its leader Osama bin Laden, are responsible for these appaling terrorist acts against U.S., and that these acts are unprovoked hostility against us and our allies.

But were the attacks unprovoked? I would suggest that they were provoked by our 100-year history of imperialism. Does this ugly history justify the attacks against the U.S.? Certainly not. But perhaps it is not quite the innocent picture that President Bush would have us and our allies believe.
tomorrow?
welcome to the crusade?
--Let us not engage in "holy war" against our ill-defined enemy.
--Let us not use this crisis to respond in hurt and anger by retaliating and taking more innocent lives on all sides.
--Let us use our minds and not bullets to resolve our conflicts with others.
--Let us take this opportunity to "wage peace" with the world.
--Let us use this opportunity to grow and become better human beings, beings committed to peace.
Heather Mercer and Dayna Curry have been proclaimed by Number 43 to be heroes. I must disagree--they are cultural criminals not heroes. They are the new publicity queens for religious intolerance and cultural imperialism. And Number 43 is in the thick with them--applauding their efforts to forceably change peoples values and beliefs. Can this really be 2001? How have we become so barbaric that we are conducting and condoning cultural and religious crusades across the globe?

People seem to be using the phrase "God Bless America" a great deal these days, with little thought to what it means. To the right is a detail of a Nazi Army belt buckle. It reads "Gott Mit Uns" which translates as "God With Us."

Dear Rabble Rouser,
The US-based media is so saturated with pabulum-like patriotism it is refreshing to see someone asking real questions.  Agreement is not the point -- debate is. Another question for your Top Qs?:  Many hundreds of foreign citizens died in the collapse of the World Trade Centre towers.  Should this obligate their nations to join the attack on al Qaeda?  What is a responsible limit to indigation?

I can only guess that because you're an AOL customer you live in the US. If you don't "love it" why don't you "leave it"? I don't suppose you want trade places with those Palestians you're so fond of, do you?
