REFLEXOLOGY
Feet have always held a fascination for man. Christ washed the feet of his disciples as an act of humility.
Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, and Tennyson praised feet in their writing.
During the Trojan war Achilles heel was associated with a weakness. Achilles was dipped in lake by his Mom who held him by his feet. The water made him strong wherever it touched him. Because the water didn't touch his heel this was his weakness.
In China small feet were honored so babies feet were bound and horribly disfigured.
ROOTS OF REFLEXOLOGY
- It is imbedded in all cultures ... all used reflexology in one form or another -
China - 5000 years ago.
Egyptians - first to write about reflexology - picture shows this. Royalty was lighter skinned because they never exposed themselves to the sun - darker skinned were servants.
North American Indians - unwritten - Cherokee Bear Clan tribe carried the tradition from generation to generation.
African Tribes - Had own form of reflexology in S. Mexico found similar info to Africa.
AMERICAN
Dr. William Fitzgerald - Born in 1872 in Conn. Founder of zone therapy. Graduated from the University of Vermont. He was an eye ear nose and throat physician Worked in Vienna with pressure points. He discovered he could releive pain in one part of body by applying pressure to another part. He refined his technique learning if he applied pressue to the finger by using an elastic band in the middle of finger and clamp on tip he could create local anesthetic effect on the arm, side of neck, eye, ear, and face. He charted all the zones and used this in his practice.
Dr. Joseph Shelby Riley used this information in his practice and had great results. He refines the zones and diagramed reflex points of the feet. Rileys physical therapist Eunice Ingham took what these physicians did and refined it and is known as the mother of reflexology. She charted all the reflex points on the body and is the modern founder of foot reflexology.
She started practicing and found that using this modality people had decreased perception of pain and increased mobility.People flocked to her from all over. She wrote two books "Stories Feet Can Tell" and "Stories Feet Have Told."
WHAT IS REFLEXOLOGY?
The body is a finely tuned machine that is synergistic with everything working together for the benefit of all. When this body is balanced we call the balance homeostasis.
A healthy body is a finely tuned wonder with everything in working order. This balance is maintained by a system of glands, organs, nerves, and chemicals. If one gets out of balance it is felt throughout entire body - This is the basis of reflexology - homeostasis and balance.
DEFINITION
Reflexology is a science based on physical and neurological study. The theoretical component behind Reflexology pertains to the concept that there are reflex points in the feet and hands which correspond to all of the systems and the parts of the body.
There are thousands of reflex points in the body.
WHAT DOES IT DO?
Relieves stress and tension (75-80% of illness comes from stress)
Homeostasis
Improves Blood Supply
Promotes unblocking of nerve impulses
Helps body to detoxify
Normalization action of reflexology is never one of opposite extremes. It cannot be unbalanced by working area too much.
Reflexology doesn't heal - it creates the circumstances through which self healing may occur.
We have become dependant on physicians to heal us In truth people heal themselves - practitioner is an agent of change - health can't improve till there is a desire to change.
When reflexology done after surgery improves and increases natural healing process.
