McCornack's Genealogy-20 - Richard McNatt

RICHARD MacNATT

Genealogy compiled by

John C.McCornack of  Yukon, Oklahoma

Limited records indicate Richard MacNatt was born in 1706 at Inverness, Scotland. Pages 169 and 170 of the "History of Lawrence County, Missouri" published in 1888 by Goodspeed, of Chicago provides the following information:

"It was in the year of 1734 that a young Scot by the name of Richard MacNatt landed at Philadelphia, the capital of William Penn's Colony of Pennsylvania. He was entitled to be called a Scotsman of the best lineage for he was not only a Highlander, but he was also a "Covenanter". To us of a latter day that word "Covenanter" means but little, but it is written in letters of blood and fire over Scottish history for scores of bloody years.

The Covenanters were men and women who, at a time when tyranny was the only government, and religion was largely a mask for debauchery and cruelty, dared to "Convenant" together to profess and practice a life of devotion, and religion of purity. One would think that any government, any people, would praise and foster that sort of a community; not so however does history tell us. For those high in authority in church and state saw at a glance that such doctrines if allowed to spread, would certainly undermine their authority, and destroy their stronghold of special privilege.

So against these "Covenanters" most of whom were people of quiet and retired lives, shepherds, farmers, and laborers, there was turned every power of unscrupulous tyrants, civil and ecclesiastical. They were hunted like wild beasts, they were shot down like the desperate murderers; they were burnt at the stake; hung on gallows at every cross roads; gentle women among them were tied to stakes on the sea shore where the rising tide finally rose over their heads and drowned them. All these things, and a thousand other devilish schemes of torture, were visited upon the heads of these innocent people, but through it all they held to their faith, they kept their "Covenant", and the great Presbyterian Church of Scotland, indeed of the world, is a living monument of the steadfast stand of their principles and their rights.

Richard MacNatt then was a Covenanter. After saying that of him there is no word that could add to the luster of his name. The young Scotsman soon brought a tract of land on the shore of the beautiful Delaware River and here he developed the farm that was to be the headquarters of the new race of his name is this new world."

Other records indicate that his farm on the Delaware River became known as "MacNatt's Delight". Sketchy records indicate he married Rebecca Anderson and as recorded in the 1776 Will of James Anderson, Kent County, Delaware she was a daughter of James. As for children of Richard and Rebecca, published records indicate that Jonathan (John) was son born in 1750. Other possible children include Reben MacNatt.

Another version of the Richard McNatt early day history is provided by the family of George Norman and Mollie McNatt Clayton.

"Born in Scotland. (Richard MacNatt) came with his family to America in 1730 to 1735. Settled in Penn's Colony on Delaware river. He and sons could read and write.

Richard MacNatt emigrated with his family from the Highlands Scotland in 1730-35. He settled in Penn's Colony on the Delaware river with John MacNatt, one of his two sons was born about 1737. The supposition is that Richard was a Scot Covenanter and was oppressed by the Lowlanders. He and his clan of which he was Chief were ousted at the battle of Floden. (Other records say Jacobite Rebellion) The Chief escaped the enemy and came to America. The older son settled in Virginia where he reared a large family.

The father (Richard MacNatt) had brought slaves presumably from Virginia, and wanted John to take some with him when he went to the District of Tennessee after the Revolutionary War. He refused, saying it was wrong to have slaves and urged his father to free them. This attitude was doubtless due to his early Quaker associations."

An additional record provided by Bernice Cox Schmidt in the Fall of 1977 provided the following:

GENEALOGY OF THE McNATTS - 1735 - 1929

"During the general rebellion in England, Ireland, and Scotland, 1715 and 1745, known in history as the Jacobite Rebellion which was an uprising against the House of Hanover, the then ruling power of England in favor of the exiled Stuarts (Jacobite from James Stuart) the latter were subdued at the Battle of Colloden 1745.

The Scottish Highlanders under their own chieftains espoused the Jacobite cause. 6000 Highlanders led by the pretender, Charles Edward, Prince of the House of Hanover, were defeated at this battle by 12,000 royal troops and by the Duke Cumberland. This extinguished the hopes of the Stuarts ever regaining the English Throne.

The Highlanders were in sympathy with the Episcopalians and belonged to it or to the Catholic Church.

Tho they failed, the hopes and wishes of the Jacobite party has been immortalized in Scottish songs and has become and interesting part of their National Literature.

The battle of Colloden resulted in the suppression by law of the Highland language and customs and the abolishment of the tribal ownership of land. The Lords converted their lands into sheep walks and deer parks. The people were compelled to emigrate or become tenants under wretched conditions.

Bernice Schmidt's statement about Highlanders' religious leanings is a bit simplistic and could be misleading. Different areas of the Highland regions followed quite different religious leanings. In the true spirit of 'independent thought' the clans themselves were at loggerheads as to whether to support the Catholic or Protestant royal houses. It is true to say that in the 1745 rebellion the mainstay of Bonnie Prince Charlie's (Charles Stuart's) support came from the Highlands, though he also received strong support throughout England and Ireland. The Quakers are a quite distinct group from the covenanters and I know of no Quakers in this period in Scotland let alone in the Highlands. Both groups were Protestant but "Quakers" would seem to be a completely erroneous reference. ... Kate

At this time, Richard MacNatt, who was a Highland Chief, and was oppressed, rather than submit, come with his family to America (1730-35) and settled in Penn's Colony on the Delaware River where one his two sons (John) was born (1737). The other son, Reuben, settled in Virginia, where he reared a large family.

John, in whom we are interested, served eight years in the Revolutionary War under Washington. In appearance he was large and raw boned, weighing 250 pounds, and was 6 feet 8 inches tall. He marched from Trenton to Philadelphia in 24 hours carrying his knapsack and gun, while only 117 of the cavalry reached there that noon.

He and his brother could read and write.

His father had slaves and wanted John to take some when he went to the pioneer country of Tennessee after the Revolution. John refused saying it was wrong and asked his father to free them. This attitude was probably due to his early Quaker associations. He was married in Tennessee to a small lady, Miss Benson, weighing 90 pounds. He was over 40 years old at this time. To them were born 3 sons and 2 daughters, Richard, Charles, Leven  (to see Leven Genealogy), Polly, Becky, and Betsy.

Richard's posterity migrated to Arkansas while Leven's and his sisters, Polly Anderson, and Becky Bedwell, and Betsy Wolf came to Southwest Missouri (1839). Some of Charles descendants become prominent.

John lived to 103 years of old. On his 100th birthday he ran and jumped the fence bars. When he was 90 he picked up his grandson (John) and spanked him as if he were a boy. His sons Richard and Charles were larger. Charles weighing 190, and Leven was small. At a house raising in pioneer Tennessee, he (John) outlifted his boys. At one time when the young men were testing their skill, he said 'Get out of the way and let a man try..' He outlifted each one. His children, brought up in the district of Tennessee had no educational advantages. They could neither read or write."

Please call us "Scotch" or "Scotchman"! As my father used to say - 'only 2 things can properly be called Scotch: one's our whisky and the others our beef.' The people are 'Scots'. We always speak of a peron as "a Scotsman" (or "a Scotswoman" to be politically correct and even handed!) ... Kate

RICHARD MacNATT

Richard MacNatt is believed to the oldest child of John MacNatt. Richard was born in 1776 and died in 1850?.

Richard married Elizabeth ________. Limited records indicate Richard was a veteran of the War of 1812. He may of died in McNairy County, Tennessee. One record indicates Elizabeth was born in 1779 in Virginia.

In a letter dated 19 May 1981, Virginia Howell, Hornsby, Tennessee provided the following information.

"I do believe that my Richard McNatt is the son of John McNatt. Richard's 1850 census lists him as being born in Delaware, so John could have married before he came to Tennessee, even though the Goodspeed History states otherwise, or Richard's census record could be wrong: or John's marriage to Sarah Benson could have been a second marriage."

Children:

1. William S. McNatt. b. 1807;

gc5 Sarah J. McNatt. b. Feb 1835; m1 Abraham Spoon in 1859. Abraham was born in May 1840. A letter dated 18 Oct 1994 from James E. Daniel, Gray Summit, Missouri provided the following:

"It appears that the Daniel family and Spoon family have been moving together. All of the adults were born in Tennessee, their first children are born in Arkansas, they move to Missouri where both families have children born, there is a break in the action when no children are born (probably while their husbands were participating in the civil war), and they move back to Arkansas by 1870 and are living next door to each other when the census was taken.

I feel confident that Lucinda and Sarah J. are sisters and daughters of William S. McNatt. My concern is whether William S. McNatt is the son Leven Benson McNatt and if not, then who is his father?

To my knowledge, I do not carry any McNatt blood in my veins, but I have many cousins who do. I descend from Walter Wooten Daniel, who is a brother of Herrald Wiggins Daniel, who married Lucinda McNatt."

Comments: My father is from Memphis, TN. His sister (my aunt) spent much of her adult life tracing our family tree. She passed away many years ago and I am just now going through her papers. I have found where she has traced our family as far as William Robert McNatt. Quite an undertaking when you consider all her research was done WITHOUT the aid of a computer, internet, email, etc!!! William Robert McNatt (married to Rittie Simmons) son of William S. is my Great-great grandfather. Most of my father's (Emmett Roberts) are buried in the Old Montazuma Cemetary. Your site has been invaluable. Thanks for the hard work, time and effort, and for sharing it all. Sherri Boone dkboone@aol.com

I have a question about your Richard McNatt page, which by the way is a gold mine of information. The page states that Richard's first son William S. married Nancy White who died in 1865. You list 11 children for William and Nancy, the last being Seymore who was born around 1869. Since Nancy died in 1865, hopefully his birth year is incorrect. What source do you have for Seymore's birth?

William married his second wife Martha Ann Baker in Oct 1867 and I could not find Seymore listed as living with their 6 children on the 1880 U.S. Census for Washburn Township, Logan County, Arkansas. Any help you can offer to clear up this discrepancy would be appreciated.  By the way, my McNatt relationship is through my g-g-grandmother Georgia Ann McNatt (b. 1862) -> John Wesley McNatt (b. 1834) -> William S. McNatt. Any additional birth, marriage, death information (including sources) you can offer, that is not on your website, for John Wesley McNatt's family would be greatly appreciated as well.

Her death marked the passing of a beautiful character, who was a shining example of the traditions of Southern womanhood.

She was married to Louis McNatt Dec. 6, 1869, and came to this region in 1876. Mr. McNatt died August 27, 1887. In 1900 she was united in marriage to J. W. He was a respected man in many ways, and his children and grandchildren were good citizens."

Jim was a farmer all his life in Greenville, Texas. He bought his 88 acre farm from his father-in-law for $4.00 per acre. James was buried in the Forest Park Cemetery, Section F, Greenville, Texas.

Below is a letter written by James:

From Greenville, Texas, Route 3, Greenville, Texas. January 24, 1929 to the Lexington Progress, Lexington, Tennessee

On October 23, 1879, I left Sardis for Hunt County, Texas, to stay just one year, but here I am. I was born about 1 1/2 miles southeast of Sardis and lived around Sardis until I was 13 years old. Then my father moved east four miles into the edge of Decatur County. There I got my first lessons in the break-down dance. I danced with all the girls from Scotts Hill to Saltillo, but the prettiest I ever saw was two miles south of Scotts Hill.

Among the large families that I remember around Sardis were the Hannas, McBrides, Bivens, Newmans, Englands, Brooks, Kents, Craigs, Hassells and others. the first school I ever attended was at Spring Hill. Tom Hopkins was my teacher and was a great blueback speller. Some of the old timers will remember him.

Jim, John and Ellen Lewis were my school mates. Bob was too small. My next school was at old Sardis church. Mat Hanna was my teacher. Next year was at the same place. Dock Hanna was my teacher. Next was at Jerusalem School with Dock Hanna the teacher. At the same place I attended the best Sunday school I ever saw. Tom Hanna was the teacher. I understand Tom is still living. Several of the old Sardis citizens live in Greenville. Mat Powell's widow, L. R. McNatt's widow, Louis McNatt's widow, John and Vestor McNatt's widows; Albert and Milton Delaney, Monroe Hassell, Bill Bunch and boys.

I also got my political schooling at Sardis, which has followed me through life. Though living in a county and state five to one Democratic, I am still a Republican, and shall die that. After talking and persuading for 49 years, I finally got Texas right. Hoover carried the state by 26,004 majority. I may do better the next 49 years.

Religiously I am a Methodist. I am the youngest child of C. C. McNatt. All my brothers and sisters are dead but one sister, Mrs. John Smith of Cement, Oklahoma.

I will be 69 the 9th of February.--J. F. (Jim) McNatt

CHARLES MacNATT - ELIZABETH WHITE

Charles C. MacNatt was born about 1780. He died on the 2 Oct 1847. A will indicates Charles died in 1850. Charles was the second son of John McNatt. Charles married Elizabeth White. She was born about 1792 according to census records. Limited records indicate she is the daughter of Samuel and Lucinda White.

Charles McNatt signed his last will and testament on the 2 Oct 1847 with an "X". This is the day he is reported to have died. In his will, he names his children. He left all his livestock consisting of horses, hogs, cows, and sheep to his beloved wife Elizabeth, with the exception of his young gray horse which he gave to his son James and a bay filly which he gave to his son John.

At the death of his wife he requested the perishable property be equally divided between his step daughter Lucinda Cobb and his four daughters, Sophia McNatt, Nancy Burns, Mary Wright, and Sarah McNatt. (This would indicate that Elizabeth his wife had a previous marriage) The will was written in Lincoln County, Tennessee.
